Titanfall (Respawn Entertainment's new IP)

A lot of negativity in here! I'm just glad that we're finally getting a big budget multiplayer FPS that:

a) Isn't Battlefield or CoD (or otherwise WW2/modern warfare in setting)

b) Is getting a simultaneous PC release (that isn't completely a Peer 2 Peer lagfest).

It actually looks quite unique, and they're taking some risks with the gameplay and player numbers etc... surely this is precisely what every genre needs, talented game devs actually experimenting with something rather than crapping out the same game year on year for 10 years.

It's a shame about the lack of modding or pure dedicated servers we can control I can agree with that, however there are A LOT of PC multiplayer games out there that are great and work the exact same way (League of Legends anyone? Or almost any MOBA for that matter).

Oh and FWIW, I don't think it'll be a TF2 killer or anything... but I hope it's fun and I'm looking forward to trying it :)

After my original post about 6 weeks ago, i have come round to your way of thinking....
My original comment on this was based on how furious i was after spending £55 on b4 and premium and how it basically sucked balls

I now have titanfall preordered (well brother is getting it me for my birthday - i hope)
This looks fun and different to other games, i am also keeping an eye on Evolve as well 4 vs 1

Just another 360 port hyped with a 'next-gen' console game tag.

Once the appeal of double bunny hopping, running on walls and using the titan fade away, it will be boring and limited with the 6 vs 6.

That's my prediction. :)

For me it's not the dedicated server thing that could kill this game. It's the AI. From what I've seen it looks very suspect.

That's intentional. Respawn want the game to be highly accessible and for inexperienced players to feel like they're doing something, so they've included around two AI opponents for each human player. To prevent weaker players getting swarmed or the bots having undue influence on the game, these bots have very low AI. The net effect is that everyone can have fun gunning down a bunch of enemies, instead of the usual scenario where newbies get frustrated because they can't get a single kill, but the match will still be won by the side with the best human players.

Using a term shamelessly stolen from Gammarauders, the bots are referred to as "popcorn".

What happens when a couple of good players win every game for their team because they spend the whole game doing nothing but methodically mowing down the popcorn?

This sort of "make the game easier to make it attractive" mechanic often has unforeseen outcomes, even when very carefully done. It's a deliberate weakness that can be exploited by the better players to game the scoring system.

I don't think there's anything wrong with bots per se, but they have to give a good approximation of real players. This is very hard to do well, and why most games either don't bother with bots or do it very badly.

I don't get the whole dedicated server issue, i mean if it plays good on the lobby system, surely that's all that matters?

I never had a problem with any of the CoD games, sure sometimes there is lag, but you get that with dedicated servers too.

But if the A I is intentionally not very good, then why big it up by saying they are "processed in the cloud". I'm not trying to bash the game I want to be be good, but from what I've seen (plus getting burned with bf4) I will believe it when I see it.

Agree 100% very good points.

Hmm, I don't. Plenty of multiplayer games are littered with AI (League of Legends again being an example) that aren't designed to emulate players, but instead have a different and very specific role in the game. It all depends on how it's been implemented surely?

I haven't played Titanfall yet, but does killing an AI yield identical results (i.e. in regards to your score etc) as killing a human opponent?

Popcorn is worth far fewer points than players and while you're wasting time on it the other team are either completing the mission objectives or ganking you while you're distracted. If the rest of your team are good enough to win in 4v6 then you were going to win anyway and all you've achieved is to gain less XP than you would have if you'd played properly.

The idea is that good players plough through popcorn on their way to real opponents while bad players farm popcorn for XP so they don't get frustrated by their inability to kill human opponents.
