Moving to PAYG or Sim only

Hi chaps,

My contract is due to end soon, and I do not want to be locked down to a 24 month contract.

I'm open minded to whether I should go to a pay monthly sim only type of contract or do I just go PAYG.

My usage is mainly data, with a fair few texts, call time isn't that important to me (i.e. 100 minutes is more than enough).

The only "issue" of course, is getting a handset, but I don't mind paying upfront for a handset, it'll be insured, and you end up paying for it on your contract anyway.

Now, I know at the end of my contract I can tell them to move me onto a PAYG only - then I can wait and see if any new phones come out.

However, presumably as long as I get the PAC I can then switch to any network and retain my number whenever I'm ready to jump ship.

Which would you recommend, sim only deal or PAYG? Which is less hassle? I'm looking at paying anything between £10-£15 a month, but ideally would like to be on a 4G network. Which of the few 4G networks is worth looking at? I'm hoping to move away from O2 if that helps :p

It really depends how much you use. Three pay is 3p per min, 2p per text, 1p per Mb.

So you need to work out how much you use and what that would be.

Or got for one of the 30day contracts if that works out cheaper. Neither is really less hassle.

Thanks for the reply. As I said, 100 mins is more than enough, maybe a few hundred texts, and then data (ideally I'd like 1Gb as a minimum).

I will be leaving Vodafone next month and in the same boat as you. I have heard a lot of good things about Three. (on these forums and other)

I am more than likely getting the Ultimate Internet SIM 200 1 month. Unlimited Data, £12.90 a month and contract is a month so if I have any problems I can change again.
Currently paying £34 a month and that was for a GS2. I have already bought a Nexus 5 so not bothered about getting another long contract just for a nice phone.

I was looking at the Virgin sim only tariff for £15 a month, unlimited everything - only catch is that it's 3G only :/

Yeah I'm tempted by the N5 - but don't know if I should just wait a little and see what comes out in the next few months and just stay with O2 on a PAYG sim so I can keep my number for the time being until I find something suitable.

The only reason I'm keen on 4G is that in London the coverage is pretty good, and 3G seems to suck - but that could just be O2 - I seldom get signal around the country, and H+ seems to drop and be slow.

Which would make a contract cheaper

£3 for minutes, £10 for data then what ever for texts. Although obviously that isn't the only payg, but I would expect the 30 day sim only to be better value.

As said three have good plans
Virgin isn't bad either
Giffgaff and o2 are ok but Tesco 3g coverage is rubbish.

Are you planning to tether?
Its only really three one plan and virgin that allow tethering. The others you may or may not get away with it.

I kept waiting and waiting and never ended up getting anything :D
I decided on the Nexus 5 because I fancied a go on stock android and coming from touchwiz I am not regretting it at all. The device is fast as hell. More than quick enough for everything I use it for.
Its personal preference at the end of the day though I know.

Yes I'm thinking that a SIm only contract may be the best way - at least they're only 12 months, and a good £10 a month if not more cheaper a month.

Yeah I had a go on a N5 - it's just what I want, I have an S3 which is fine, but something more stock. I'm in no rush so I can see what's out there.

.

Not even 12 months, plenty are 30day rolling contracts and still cheap. I don't even look at 12month contracts, I always get 30day rolling contracts and have done for a fair few years now.
