My House was burgled

When an alarm is put in, do they have to chase up the walls or anything? Really not keen on the idea of my renovated place being trashed again.

The alarm i have chosen is fully wireless, im not really 100 on the spec but i will find out tomorrow as thats when her cousin is starting the work

I know my policy states that all windows and doors must be secured when out. If you left your window open (even on the latch) I would be worried they would decline my claim. That said im sure it will be fine.

As for CCTV I put a QVIS system in on my place last year. Cracking bit of kit, adds another layer of "keep the ***** of my house" to the mix. The way I see it is that if they want in for a reason there coming in regardless. If its a chancer stalking the estate and yours has an alarm, cctv etc chances are they will look elsewhere.

To hear of your bad news. I have to agree with Thompson_NCL. The feeling of being violated in your own home would hurt the most.

#waits for parodical comment from Von.

We were burgled about 8 years ago now, it still bugs me that someone was in my house. The worst part is we were upstairs asleep and the the only thing that I can think of is that we had a young baby who probably woke us up and cried and scared them off.

We didn't know till I got up for work, checked the back door to find it wide open, they only got an old mp3 player, some loose change and a digital camera. Could have been worse and they could have took more, it did look like they had opened my work bag to possibly load it up but got scared off mid burglary.

I feel for you :(

Feel for you buddy, happened to me a few years ago and it proper messes you up mentally. Possessions as you say can be replaced normally but the feeling of knowing someone broke into your place is horrible.

Never could get over it and ended up selling and moving on, which we were going to do anyway but probably 2 years before planned!

I must be strange I've been broken into before and the whole feeling violated because someone had been in my house didn't even cross my mind.

we had our shed robbed once they took my brothers motorbike. the night they robbed us my brother was asleep on sofa and in the morning he said i heard some noise from outside but couldnt be bothered to get up and look. i know he is a lazy sod.

now get this, 2 weeks later, three youths tried to force my backdoor at around 2am, we heard them so this time the whole house got up, they didnt get far though as my crowbar made contact with one of there heads he went down and out while his mate legged it. we got the knocked out robbing scumbag and took him afew streets down and left him in the gutted. no need for police. they havent been back lol

...It is not the fact that they took stuff, I do not really care about that, I am fully insured, its the fact somebody has been wandering around my sanctum sanctorum...

+1

The stuff isnt what would play on my mind, its just the mental image of someone else standing in my lounge/bedroom/kitchen :(:(

So last night I came in from a hard day at work to find my house had been burgled. :(

I have been mugged before and had a car stolen before but this is the first time my property has ever been violated and it is a horrible feeling.

It is not the fact that they took stuff, I do not really care about that, I am fully insured, its the fact somebody has been wandering around my sanctum sanctorum like its theirs or they have a right to be there.

Maybe just one or two items from my wife's jewellery box wont be to easy to replace but the rest was my Nexus 7, about £400 in cash, a few bits of Jewellery and a camera, so although annoying to lose, easy to get hold of new ones.

I did not exactly make it hard for them either, the small window at the top of my lean-to was left open a crack and I did not lock the door between the lean-to and main house.

I live in a nice house in a nice area, surrounded by decent people and I guess I was pulled into a false sense of security. Not any more, a little late and an expensive lesson but tomorrow I have a guy coming to install an alarm, cctv and lights to the property.

The other thing that is bothering me is I am due to fly to Egypt for 2 weeks in Sunday and I cant see how I can lay there in the sun and relax knowing the house is unattended, even if it is going to be well protected.

Grrrrrr life :(

Might put your mind at rest, you can check in on the house anytime you want.

Do a bit of research on wired versus wireless alarm systems as I'm sure I remember our fitter being less than impressed with wireless solutions. He was also very frank about the effectiveness of house alarms in general, the upshot being that if someone wants your stuff, they'll have it regardless of alarms, cctv etc. Having said that, I guess it must act as some deterrent to the opportunist theif otherwise we wouldn't get a 13% reduction on our home contents insurance.

Anyway, sorry you were robbed. That sucks.

A) police will not use it B) it would not be able to be used as evidence of a robbery.

We have had police come to look at out CCTV when someone was disturbed nicking a handbag from a house down the road as the guy they caught denied being in the area, one of them spent an hour looking at footage & when it spotted the guy walking past he actually went to the effort to go & get a USB drive as they wanted a copy. He was also looking at the times busses went past as he was going to go & request footage from the bus depot as they are fitted with CCTV & our footage could narrow down where to look.

The cameras will be linked to a box under my tele
Seriously, do not do this!!!

I am probably looking at about £1500 - £1800 (depending on which cameras we go for) for the whole system
I'd run the kit list by the people in H&G forum, that sounds well over the top.

They will be suspect of wireless systems because it puts them out of a job, but he does have a point, they are less reliable than wired ones.
I'd never have one.

I can only begin to think about what it must be like to have been burgled and you have my sympathy.

I know this is going to sound really harsh but if the guys have robbed your house are good at what they do, then they'll have been profiling the street for a long time. Good basics such as timed lighting (especially this time of year), good physical security and lighting external areas will be as much of a deterrent as having an actual CCTV system. As others have said, they're more of a visual deterrent than anything.

Invest in a decent wired alarm with a response or call out rather than a cheap wireless system.

I do have to say that its not a smart move telling everyone that you're home will shortly be unoccupied whilst you're sunning yourself a thousand miles away, plus you've also discussed all the details of your new defensive systems!

At least they'll know to remove the hard drive before they leave your property again! :(

Thanks for this mate, it looks really good im going to have a chat with the sparky tomorrow and see if this is a better solution than the one he has come up with.

Hey Mags, the reason i want a wireless system is because most of the rooms are the finished article and i didnt want any chasing done or trunking everywhere, the only thing i was think about after doing some research like you said was; maybe have a wired system and because i have quite high ceilings get a plasterer to come round and stick some coving up??? i dunno its all up in the air, i will know more tomorrow.

p.s thanks for the serious post and not trolling me im genuinely flattered :D
