Broadwalk Empire Worth A Watch?

Seasons 1 and 2 were ok but 3 and 4 were really excellent to the point that I am gutted the 5th season will be the last.

I struggled to watch 3 & 4 week by week, however I knew it was a quality show so saved them up and watched them all over a week each year (one season in a week per year, does that make sense? lol). It was far more coherent and enjoyable like that.

Slow going but seem to end up watching it every time. Considering the next season is the last their isn't going to be much of Al Capone's story considering when this first started I thought it was going to be more and more about him?

Bump!

Watched the first episode last night. Was a bit annoyed by the fact there was no back story to Nucky. I assume this is something that will come as the series progresses? It almost made me feel like I jumped in at Series 2 by mistake!

i watched the first and second seasons. not a bad show but feel the limited time i have on tv would be better spent on other things so doubt il watch anymore.

I'm watching it on NowTV and found the first series 'ok' but not captivating. It felt like a weak impersonation of The Sopranos taken back in time and I struggled to get attached to any of the characters. Especially Buscemi, who lacks a leader's charisma in a way which was never a problem with Galdolfini in The Sopranos.

However I was glad I moved on to series 2 and 3. I found one or two characters I cared about in a twisted kind of way, and the plots improve.

Series 4 seems a little slower so far but I had to watch the first episode of season 5 last night, before it dropped off NowTV's playlist. That was great and had some stuff in it which I wish had been included early in season 1. It has kind of spoiled some of season 4 for me though. :-)

Overall I'm having no problem watching two or three episodes a day, and there's often an ending which really sucks you into the next episode. So it's earned a place on my First Division series list even though it's in no danger of competing with Premiere League titles like The Wire or Sopranos.

Given up on it after one and a half seasons. Solid handful of interesting characters and ideas but ultimately - show about nothing. Everything of gravitas that happened in season one, happened in first episode. The reminder of the season was just a slow burner running the same flame. I've given it extra half a season two hoping something would happen, but it was still slow burning the same flame. You could tell all the plot of 18 episodes I saw across two hours tops, and that would be stretching it to snail pace.

Finished season 4 yesterday and I've got 6/8 recorded of season 5. Looking to have a season 5athon when I have them all. Great series just a shame it's going to end so soon.

Definitely worth it, I've just finished off Season 3 & will be starting Season 4 this evening. It's got a great feel to it, real atmospheric.
I'd say if you are in to your Box sets then it's a Must see. :)

The complete lack of any history on the characters is confoundedly stupid. I like the show in the way people like cheesy films.

Issues:
Some of the characters are pathetic.
Jimmy was killed off but they failed to follow up on that story besides he'd gone 'missing'. He'd just took control of Atlantic City, why would he go missing??
His 'mother' is an odd/somewhat useless character at best. She molested him as a child, can't see the point of that little side story..?
The 'commodore'....wtf and the various Jews that financed the city...wtf.

Where is the back story??? Watching this is like starting The Wheel of Time book series at book 5.

I've made it to the end of series 2, and I'm not sure I cba with anymore.

Too much missing for this to be anything but OK. People who compare this to The Sopranos need their head checking.

The thing is the backstory comes at the end of the whole series, not at the start or during. You get the gist of it as the series draws to an end and everything is explained and made clear. In a way I liked it that way, it was different and kept you wondering even if a lot of it was predictable and allowed you to make your own assumptions along the way.
