Philip Seymour Hoffman dead at 46

You hung me out of a plane. You can tell a lot about a persons character by how they treat people they don't have to treat well.
R.I.P Dude :(

Because if you did, you wouldn't be so dismissive and quick to pass your almighty judgement on someone else whose life you know nothing about.

(Ironic huh?)

Yet you've passed judgement on me and other people in this thread. Ironic and hypocritical!

Sadly it's not a surprise to me that this thread brought out the "he deserved it" posts. How would you feel if someone's response to being informed that a relative of yours had died in a car accident was "well they knew that it's possible to die in car accidents therefore that person is an idiot".

Grow up.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman -(On quitting drinking at age 22)
I think I would have drank myself to death, literally, if I didn't just stop, once and for all when I did. I am not ever going to preach to anyone about drugs or drinking. But, for me, when they were around, I had no self control."

This. Some people have no life experience or are so naive they think addiction can be avoided like choosing whether or not to put on a jumper. You generally find theyre the same ones who think the war on drugs is a working.

I never knew getting into a car was like taking drugs. I shall do it more often.

No one has said addiction is avoidable, might actually help to read the thread before you start going all anti-drug war :o

People are merely saying that he did Heroin in the first place, kinda like choosing wether or not to put on a jumper eh? ;)

Condolences to his young family, awful having to grow up without a father due to circumstances like this

If he didn't know the risks of heroin or whatever he was on he's an idiot. If he knew them and still took it he's an idiot. Idiot is quite appropriate to be honest.

Its been said multiple times.

It really isn't. People take drugs for a myriad of reasons and the vast majority who do so, dont die or suffer ill effects from it. That is true for the all drugs from nicotine and caffeine through to heroine and cocaine and the progression from one to the other. You might as well blame Hoffman for his first drink of alcohol eh? ;)

Deaths from drugs often come as a result of the drugs being illegal and unregulated, possibly in Hoffmans case too from heroin mixed with another product. Just another reason the war on drugs has been a miserable failure, because it causes waste like this, buries people who need help under a cloud of criminality and strains our public health institutions for no good reason other than to meet some 19th century version of morality. Its also pushed most of the deaths away to places like Afghanistan and South America which apparently is palpable for those who feel better championing the 'war on drugs'.

Anyway this is getting OT.

It's clearly not that simple, a better way to think of it is that a driver is racing along at 150 mph on an public road. They do this very often, every couple of days but while they know that doing so is very dangerous, they continue as they like the "high from it". All it takes is a simple mistake or a problem with the car to cause a crash.

I can see the anaolgy but for me, its about a person who needs to get from A-B to get a reward using a particular bus service which is nice and slow and cosy. The only downside is that each time they take the trip the bus goes faster, but the reward is bigger. At some point the bus is going so recklessly fast that most people are going to say 'hey, that reward just isnt worth taking the risk for.' Others might say just a couple more trips. There are some who are just going to keep going no matter what.

Eventually the risk youre taking will either become too much and you'll stop, or you'll crash. Even thats a terrible analogy because it does not factor in addiction, because at some point the reward is so huge it doesnt matter what speed the bus is going. Theres also personality traits, for some taking the riskier ride will be part of the reward. Gah, im sure this is explained better elsewhere.

Sad news, didn't know he had children.

As for taking Heroin. IMO, addiction is not an illness or a disease. I honestly can't think of an alcoholic as having a "disease".

Heroin is easy to take up, very hard to put down. Your choice initially but very quickly takes over.

I'm in no way religious but I think it's about time I practiced that "he who have no sin cast the first stone" thingy, looks like a few others should as well.

Lou Reed dies and hardly a mention yet Phillip Seymour Hoffman dies (R.I.P. btw) and it's on the news for 2 days.

Because Lou Reed wasn't as famous.

People see Hoffman on their screens, they don't see Reed. Besides, Reed was 71, Hoffman was 46, age is a factor here.

Such a great actor and such a shame! He had quite a good catalog building up with some fantastic performances :(
This is still one of my favs as it always made me laugh :D
