GS5 to launch in January

I don't understand why they're letting the screen size creep up on the galaxy range, they've got the note if you want a big screen and top specs.
They should leave the galaxy range at around the S4 size and no bigger.

Why do they have to up the pixel density... Like anyone can realistically tell (or care about) the difference between say, 400 and 500 ppi anyway? Do we need quad HD in a phone? (maybe when I see one I can judge more fairly). Surely this is currently a area with limited need for development, which also only negates any advances made in the battery life department. Why not focus on improving display tech, power consumption, durability instead (which I hope they are doing anyway).

S5 sounds quite appealing, but I'd seriously consider a Nexus device too.

Google could make a definitive best on the market Nexus device. I'm surprised they haven't already. The Nexus 5 could have been the best on the market.

People said that about 1080p and now people complain if a phone doesn't have a 1080p screen. I agree, it's totally ridiculous, but we need a bigger screen, because Samsung says we do and people believe them!

Exactly. Ok I understand pushing the boundaries with home TVs. But mobile devices? I don't understand who would ever 'need' quad HD on a 5 inch display, like it's going to make any noticeable difference vs 'normal' full HD. Tbh I'd say display tech/pixel shapes make more of a difference at this level than even 720 vs 1080p. Bottom line, stop wasting power on the display!!

Because Samsung wants to show they have the resources to produce this sort of stuff. It would be nice if they concentrated on the screen's battery usage instead... at that size and resolution, it's going to take a chunk of battery life... I'm happy with around ~350 ppi, anything above that is plain silly...

It annoys me that there's going to be two versions of the S5 as well, can't they just stick to one SoC? Is adding LTE support to the Exynos SoCs that hard?

There's two versions of the iPhone as well.

Are you talking about the 5c and 5s? Because they're being marketted as different phones, because they are different phones... Where as for the S3 and S4 both snapdragon/exynos versions was under the same name...

Samsung is a giant now and it's come to the point where Apple feel they need to throw lawsuits at them for supposedly using their patents or copying their things (swipe to unlock, predictive text and so on). Yet you want Samsung to copy Apple even more?

People buy Apple products these days because it's the brand name, the image that Jobs has built for the name is mammoth and unstoppable. People will buy the product if it's good or bad, because it's an Apple product.

You might say that's not the reason why but it really is. In the same way I'll always buy an Android product (not necessarily from Samsung, just so happens Samsung fit my criteria right now) because I've invested time and money into the whole Google experience, you're the same with Apple's counterpart.

People just need lengthy runs with various systems to see what their daily lives fit best around. I found Apple to restrict my daily usage of mobile technology whereas Android promotes it.

But that's me...

Like I said, I think you're wrong. You can't make the argument that people only buy Apple products on the basis of the name without also saying that people buy Android and Samsung on the same basis. At which point you're basically saying no one buys anything because it's actually good but simply because of the name attached.

There will be far more than 2 versions :).

Oh dear.

I do dis-like Apple phones nowadays, but at least they understand that more than two phones is too many!!!!!!!!!!

Samsung must have at least 10 variants of the S4?

It's a cunning marketing ploy by Samsung. By spreading desirable features amongst multiple different models of phone, it encourages many users to chop and change their devices fairly frequently, each time earning Samsung a very pretty penny. I find this practice incredibly distasteful myself.

Indeed.

Sounds like they don't really care about their customers (can't talk really as I have a Note 3 - not for much longer though, don't like it :D).

They'd counteract that by saying they are providing devices with more functions for every user :p

You still having signal issues with your N3?
