I think you're wrong there. I buy Apple based on the strength of their products. And if products being sold are on the basis of being part of something rather than any particular merit, surely you're speaking about Samsung and Android as both having the largest share of their respective markets?
What strengths?

S5 sounds quite appealing, but I'd seriously consider a Nexus device too.
Why do they have to up the pixel density... Like anyone can realistically tell (or care about) the difference between say, 400 and 500 ppi anyway?
People said that about 1080p and now people complain if a phone doesn't have a 1080p screen. I agree, it's totally ridiculous, but we need a bigger screen, because Samsung says we do and people believe them!
It annoys me that there's going to be two versions of the S5 as well, can't they just stick to one SoC? Is adding LTE support to the Exynos SoCs that hard?
There's two versions of the iPhone as well.
Samsung is a giant now and it's come to the point where Apple feel they need to throw lawsuits at them for supposedly using their patents or copying their things (swipe to unlock, predictive text and so on). Yet you want Samsung to copy Apple even more?
People buy Apple products these days because it's the brand name, the image that Jobs has built for the name is mammoth and unstoppable. People will buy the product if it's good or bad, because it's an Apple product.
You might say that's not the reason why but it really is. In the same way I'll always buy an Android product (not necessarily from Samsung, just so happens Samsung fit my criteria right now) because I've invested time and money into the whole Google experience, you're the same with Apple's counterpart.
People just need lengthy runs with various systems to see what their daily lives fit best around. I found Apple to restrict my daily usage of mobile technology whereas Android promotes it.
But that's me...
What strengths?
Sigh. Come on now kids. This is only heading one way...
Because Samsung wants to show they have the resources to produce this sort of stuff. It would be nice if they concentrated on the screen's battery usage instead... at that size and resolution, it's going to take a chunk of battery life... I'm happy with around ~350 ppi, anything above that is plain silly...

There will be far more than 2 versions.
Yeah, here comes the Zoom version: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_may_have_imported_galaxy_s5_zoom_units_for_testing-news-7735.php
I'm just annoyed that both snapdragon and exynos versions of the main phone gets branded under the same name.
Oh dear.
I do dis-like Apple phones nowadays, but at least they understand that more than two phones is too many!!!!!!!!!!
Samsung must have at least 10 variants of the S4?
It's a cunning marketing ploy by Samsung. By spreading desirable features amongst multiple different models of phone, it encourages many users to chop and change their devices fairly frequently, each time earning Samsung a very pretty penny. I find this practice incredibly distasteful myself.
Indeed.
Sounds like they don't really care about their customers (can't talk really as I have a Note 3 - not for much longer though, don't like it).
