Yeh but 100mm of armour isn't 50mm when going down hill it's still 100mm

When you are facing it on flat ground and he's coming down a slope at you, his effective 100mm (50mm actual) is effective 50mm
because you are hitting that 50mm (actual) at 90 deg, rather than at say 30deg

No, 100mm of armour is still 100mm of armour, it's more than that when the slope is being effective (i.e. they are on flat ground), but the 100mm of armour is still at least 100mm of armour no matter what angle they are. The stats are based on the actual armour thickness, not the effective.

Even the drawing you posted support this, so I have no idea where you are getting 50mm from?

Pretty sure we are making the same point... :o
not sure if you are following the difference between my use of actual and effective terms

enemy tank has 50mm of armour, (actual)

when it's going downhill I only have to pen 50mm of armour because it is now at 90deg to me

when enemy is on the flat I have to pen 50mm armour (actual) which is now at a slope,
which is more like 80-100 (whatever) mm of armour (effective).

You were all making the same point

My 2 cents is that if you are shooting at a T29 front on you are doing something wrong.
As a med, you should be flanking him.
You should only be front on if flanking isn't an option due to his team being behind him, but even if that is the case, you should be doing it from somewhere he can't see you to fire back.

A medium and a heavy have different roles, they are strong when they play their role but very weak when trying to play each others role.

Why do tanks sit outside the city on the Siegfried Line map?
Having tanks on either side of a street makes life so much easier as they can only fire back at one of you.

The only time they get to do anything is when the game is lost and the other team swarm out to go looking for them.

I've just watched a Tiger, 16 shots fired, all fired when we had already lost everyone, no kills, and he was dead in 4 shots
Didn't even bother to hide behind a bunker 10 feet away

Every time I play this map, there are four tanks outside the city walls doing nothing (also four enemy tanks on the hill next to the town doing nothing much either).

Not possible at that point in the game (had tanks on all four sides as I'd just snuck behind their lines).
At least I know now to avoid the turret

Just had a second bout with a T29 on the same map and I lost badly, although had he not been backed by a Tiger I guess I could have taken more time to aim.

Argh, what is it with French tanks ? FIVE penetrations and a couple of bounces to kill a BDR G1 B ?
It took five to kill a Tiger and five to kill a Black Prince.
They always look like Pre-WWI leftovers but always give me grief.

Is your crew all 100%? As this greatly effects spotting range.

None of my crew are at 100%, how long does that take? I have the 'Accelerate Crew Training' box ticked and no matter how many battles I fight, and win, the crew percentage values hardly ever change. They've been stuck on the same values now for days. I paid the 20,000 to get one up to 75% thinking it'd help, and he's still bloody sat at 75%.

I'd recommend you download a mod called XVM which shows the last position of spotted tanks along with a few other good benefits. Makes the map much better including your spotting range.

Downloaded it,
extracted into res_mods/0.8.10/

nothing happens  game looks the same

Thanks, I'll give that a go tonight.

XVM installation looks simple, but the folder names don't match up. It says you don't need to touch anything, but then talks about renaming some file whose location is a bit vague.
Nice of WoT to provide a mods folder though, even if it makes no mention of a mods existence when it is loading.

Hax! :D

Although be careful of the XVM mods that you use. Any that show a win chance % will just depress the hell out of you!

http://xvm-mod.com/xvm-updater/

Use this as it auto updates/installs the files for every patch change.

That worked for me, thanks
although I can't get it to open the xmc file with that web editor.

I've opened all the likely files but it just gives me an error.
I'm not sure how to open other mods either

Apparently (according to XVM) I'm a tomato :D
I was thinking I was doing OK tbh, get the odd kill, land in the top half of the ranking quite a lot with a page of hits. Sometimes I turn around and find I'm the last guy standing, so not sure why I'm down ranked so much?
I must be one of the better tomatoes because I always seem to be the only one on a team. (just got another last man Spartan)

I tried following a purple guy into battle once to learn from him, but he got shot in the face before we got 100m in :(

Think its based on your win rate/damage/kills/deaths? per battle etc. Don't think cap/def count much towards it now.

TBH you want to be doing about double your tanks health per a game with a good win rate to increase your win rate/chance to win etc

Not getting anywhere near that really, maybe something like 600 damage a game in a T-43? Maybe a kill or two every other game.

I'm pretty much always just above the middle in XP at the end of a game. but Service Record has me down as 214 av xp/battle which sounds really low?

Taking someone's advice on here and just doing damage where I can rather than hanging about for a kill, and I think I'm surviving longer as a result.
I still find myself in stupid exposed locations, or expecting people to still be behind me when they actually stopped miles behind (downside of a fast tank I guess)

Starting to like city battles now when I used to hate them before, I think it's being more aware of being flanked.

Just had a fluke game, doing absolutely nothing but being pinned down by some top tanks, nabbed3741 spotted damage :p
