Life after Resident Evil 4HD

The basic summary here is then - there is nowhere to go after RE4. Everything else similar sucks.
I'm not even a RE fan in general and RE4 is probably the only one in the series I enjoyed as I didn't play 1-3 when they were out originally. Playing RE1 Gamecube edition on the PC in 1080p though was good and prooves beyond a doubt that the old style of play would still work today and it doesnt have to be a crappy action game.

Playing that is the only recommendation RE related I can give

IMO RE6 is an unplayable mess of a game. I'm not a typical RE fan saying it's too much of an action game - I just think as an action TPS it did nothing right. Terrible camera angle choices, boring gunplay, poor level design, useless AI, unimaginative enemies, pointless QTEs, terrible dialogue, badly designed characters and zero difficulty. Might as well have been unlimited health and ammo in that game on Hard mode as i think I only got hit once or twice in the entire game.

Rant over....shame I had to relive the experience just now. Urgh

I'm playing it through on co-op with a friend at the moment. Well, I have been for the past several months, we keep leaving it and coming back to it, determined that we'll get the damn thing finished. It just seems to go on forever; I love long games but this feels like it could have been half the length and probably better for it.

Edit: Just looked up how far we are through it. Jesus, there's still so much left, it goes on forever. :(

I think he was talking about RE6.

As I felt the same, it seems to last forever but largely because it drags on so much and was so horrible to play. That 2 week period of playing it on and off felt like I'd put 100 hours into it.

That's exactly how I am with gaming these days. If a game hasn't gripped me within 30 minutes (sometimes I give it an hour) then I'm done. I have no time to play something I don't think is 'great'. I used to be able to play anything but now I find I have no patience whatsoever for games.

It's annoying because more games than ever seem to mess about for an hour with condescending tutorials and I can never seem to stand it long enough to get through it. Probably missing out on some good games.

I got RE4 on PS Plus for free but changed accounts since and forgot to play it. Shame as I could fancy going through it now while I wait for Dark Souls 2

Glad it's not just me!

This is what I suspected and opened the thread for advise. I had the feeling when researching games after playing 4 that every other game would be a compromise.

The plan of replaying some of the older ones seems the way forward. (they should have properly released 1 remake on pc!)
As well as checking out things like Dead Space. Re trying Alan Wake and a newer silent hill. Then likely being disappointed of course!

Just got to work out why my gamecube plays slow motion for my games (except resi 4) !
Will try it on the big tv down here. It's odd as my dreamcast/ps2 are fine on the bedroom tv.

I loved re4. I too missed 1-3 but I couldn't quite get on with re1 when I tried ti play it back a few years ago. Resi5 was okay but mainly because I did local co op. Didn't bother playing re6

Ok so pre Christmas I got Resident evil 4 HD on xbox.

I forgot how good it was!

I now have all achievments and I am on a third playthrough however I feel after this I need a new game.

Thing is I cannot think what to play next!

I have Resi 5 achievments, trying 6 on pc but really cannot get into it!

Anything remotely similar? or 2/3 as good ?

Interesting, in my opinion 2 is the pinnacle of the series. I really don't get the hype for Resident Evil 4, it's a good game and all, but it doesn't feel like a Resident Evil game to me. It lost the whole survival aspect, items were far too easy to hoard and it felt quite dumbed down in my opinion. On Professional difficulty it's slightly better, but I much prefer the "old style" with the static CGI backgrounds from the Playstation-era. As for the remake, well my opinion on remakes is mainly that they aren't often better than the originals, I haven't played the Gamecube remake of Resident Evil, but others which I have played such as The Twin Snakes were just dire in comparison to the original games on which they were based.

Although you acknowledge that 4 is good, it is honestly beyond my comprehension that any thinks 4 isn't the best, because it is so overwhelmingly the best any statement to the contrary hurts my head :p

The village scene at the start is awesome. Just a brief intro into combat mechanics then the game basically says 'lol good luck' and with no warning throws 10x more enemies at once than you had previously dealt with. I'd say it was equally difficult and ammo was never particularly generous, nothing like later games. I can't think of one scene in 4 that was 'dumb', apart from the fact you were rescuing the president's daughter, which is high up in the cheese stakes! So much variety in the game play with nothing ever outstaying its welcome.... hedge-maze, sewers, mine cart, Ashley section... and the most memorable boss battles. Sorry to gush, but it is outstanding and I will fight anyone to the death that says otherwise :D

Definitely get on the remake though. It's what RE-1 would have been if they had the technology. It's also easily the hardest of the series (although I always found zero tough!). Sadly RE5 and 6 are just mindless... a mere shell of the atmosphere and game-play of 4 :(

So... You liked it then? :p

I do want this game but fortunately for me I have a massive backlog of Steam games I still need to complete so i'll do what everyone else does, get it in the Steam sales. :p

I think a big part is nostalgia. I played 4,5,6 very close to each other for the first time and honestly they were all very similar experiences (all really fun 6>4>5 IMO).

What striked me the most is how poorly Code Veronica fared. I always thought of it as my best Resi but on reflection it has several BIG design flaws (mainly relating to ammo conservation and save points).

I think the only possible way forward from RE4 is Blue Stinger on the Dreamcast :p

The only game that gave me a similar experience to RE4 was the first Dead Space, it just falls a little short and runs out of steam in the dying sections of the game, it's the only game I can think of in recent years that kept me on the edge of my seat like an RE game.

If you have a PS3 then get them from the store.. :) They are in Higher Res and plays just as well AND has added bits in it.

7 needs to stray from 6 otherwise nobody will buy it, it's awful.

I wouldn't say 6 was awful. The Leon campaign is very good its just the rest that isn't great. There was some great moments in it though. At the end of the day they tried to move with the times and make it a mix of horror and action that didn't work a great deal. That said the sections with the Ustanak and the sections with the main Leon boss were great! The Ustanak reminded me of the Tyrant and Nemesis from the earlier games.

I am pretty sure that Capcom have already stated that the new game will be returning to its horror roots.

The gamecube resident evil 2 and 3 looked better than the ps3 smoothingo ver the psone copy on psn. Try to get a wii and the original gamecube discs. Shame the wii u wont do that and they didnt do 2 and 3 on wii sized discs or i'd be all over those.
