Just ordered 2 x GTX780Ti. Am I mad?

GTX780Ti aint anywhere near enough above 1920x1200 in recent games so you made the right choice.

Those extra pixels become much harder to render/manipulate so PCI-E bandwidth gets hit much harder IME you need the fastest cards & CPU you can afford above 1920x1200 as games are not optimised for it so it takes a lot more power to give a smooth experience with max gfx details.

Actually it's the other way round, as the resolution increases the fps decrease and the CPU/PCI-E lanes get to do less work. This means that a lower overclock is needed on the CPU. Higher resolutions mean that more work stays on the GPUs.

Hmmm. Getting bad coil whine type noise on both cards. Tried each on their own, both together, and it's pretty bad. Not had this for years.

Happens even when vsynced to 60. If run games etc without vsync and the fps shoot up it's mental.
This isn't right is it, my 670's didn't make this sort of noise.

Pretty sure it's the cards and not my PSU making any sort of noise too.

Any advice? I'm not laying down a grand to have this sort of noise.

Coil whine would be a no no for me and does happen. I would find your max overclock and loop Heaven for a few hours (v-sync off) and see if that improves it. If it is too much, return them but make a cone put it in your ear and go over the GPU's and PSU, as the noise can be deceiving as to where it is coming from.

With all the benching I did on water and previously, mine are dead silent now.
They're like Hampshire lasses, you just need to run them in and they stop squealing afte a few goes...
That's a terrible analogy isn't it? Ah well it's Friday :D

It's not coil whine as such, almost more like a really fast 'buzz'. It's hard to explain. Making a coil whine noise when I exit out of Heaven bench though.

Tombraider is a good example - if I have vsync off the menu is going at about 120fps, and this noise is going, but every time a wave breaks this noise pauses for a little split second. Very odd.

*EDIT* - it almost sounds more like a 'fan fault' if that makes sense, but it's not as if I pause the game the noise stops instantly and I can hear fans whooshing along fine.

Any other advice, apart from 'running them in'?

Not happy.

Please check with your GP before inserting anything into your ear.

Seriously though, hope it works out - I wouldn't want problems after that outlay either!

Heaven does that for me on my Titans and a couple of other proggies that I can't remember off hand but not in games. I know what you mean though and I think it is more to do with the phase capacitors going like crazy.

Right, I *think* it might be my PSU making this noise now, but not totally sure. It does it if I have just one, or both of the 780Ti in.

Now, it can't be a 'lack of power' issue and the PSU stressing out if it's doing it with one card as well as 2 can it. And, this PSU makes no noise when I run my GTX 670's in SLI, overclocked. 2 overclocked 670s draw more power than 1 stock, reference 780Ti Right?

So, what can it be? Can it be that my PSU just does not get on with 780Ti???

Not sure what to do now. Not shelling out a load of cash to upgrade to be plagued by this noise. Think I might send the cards back, not sure I can be bothered buying and testing new power supplies, only to find the same thing might happen. Arrrrrgggg.

It could be down to your Psu and the only way to fully test would be trying with another. It's not unheard of! Different components and different levels of strain applied.

I guess. In case I do decide to try anew PSU can I have some recommendations please folks for what works well with SLI Gtx 780ti. Preferably from users with that actual setup?

I d be looking at some of the the 1000w models on here I guess to make the upgrade worthwhile, so the superflower, BeQuiet or the NZXT all around the £150 mark is what I'm thinking. Have to say I've not even heard of any of those, so are they any good!!?

I get that mosquito like buzz, got a new psu but i cant test just yet, doing the raymarch test on catzilla is when its at its worse, sounds like somethings gonna blow!

The Superflower was the one I was thinking! Good are they?

Superflower leadex 1000/1200w plat or nothing :)

Have had mine a month or so now, solid and silent, looks pretty good too!

I believe these units are also relatively cheap on this weeks deals, you'd have to spend a fair chunk more money on a unit that comes close...seasonic/antec. No brainer.

I would advise using both 780 Ti cards.

If you look at Gopher's Skyrim Lets Play videos on the Tube, he uses a single 780 and a fairly well OC'd processor and plays at 1920x1080p with a moderate ENB. He gets a fairly steady frame rate in most areas but dips to the high 40s.

You are playing at 2560x1080 so a single 780 Ti will be struggling to get you smooth 60fps at that resolution, especially if you want to load up the textures and the ENB.

Keep both Ti cards and treat yourself to an upgraded PSU. Who knows, you may want a 1440p monitor in the future.

Or the EVGA SuperNOVA G2 1300W Gold, if he could get hold of one ;)
