bbc forcing mixed panels on their shows

Wait until they decide that nationalities have to be represented - there will be one English person on the panel and they will have to be a transvestite.

Equality can't be achieved in this manner, as others have pointed, so what I see here is as an attempt to break a traditional "gentleman club". The agencies that pick these comedians are run by men and they choose mostly men because that's the status quo and because most of the applicants are male. Merit is only part it of it, it's not even the main criteria so it's interesting to see some of you lament its lack of importance.

In the short term, you get less quality humour but in the long term, considering women will get more opportunities, the quality increases.

If only I could show my feelings at these decisions by not paying my TV licence.

if only we could, but that's another thread entirely :)

wonder how long it will be before one of the topgear team are replaced by a woman ?

I honestly can see the BBC breaking up currently good presenting teams like above to satisfy this sense of equality they want to force on everyone.

What a load of rubbish, I'm sorry but there aren't a huge amount of female comedians out there - much less funny female comedians.

It's going to end up them repeating the same female comedians week after week and it'll get dull, or they'll get some rubbish unfunny female comedians in.

All this "gender divide" stuff is tosh, women have the exact same rights as men now, there aren't really any dinosaurs left saying "no, we'll get a man in". All it is, is a bunch of women who wish they were part of the original feminist movement pretending there is some great injustice and that men are the enemy, I'm all for equality, but not for indulging the whims of a bunch of militant anti man protestors.

be better at their jobs?

why would the agency pass up a good act unless it doesn't sell because its not good.

remember relevant content is part of the parameters for a good act.

If you still think that comedians are being chosen on merit, let me give you another example:

Orchestras in the US used to have a 90:10 gender bias in favour of men. The people running auditions believed that they were picking orchestra members based on merit. They believed that men were naturally better at playing in an orchestra. Why would they pass up on a good musician?

Then these orchestras started using blind auditions. And guess what? The percentage of successful women applicants rose to around 35%. It became clear that the people running the auditions were discriminating against women.

Source.

Unfortunately, it's impossible to audition comedians without knowing their gender.

The thing I dislike about the massive majority of female comedians is that they bang on about being female or being fat... Likewise, a lot of foreign comedians bang on about being foreign...

Don't find it funny :(

Those figures still show a very strong bias towards men, So either the men were naturally better at playing in an orchestra, or the blind auditions didn't really solve anything.

To add to this, you'd also need to look at the ratio of men to women applying... Was the increase in selected women the result of more women applying?

I reckon there will be a rise in entertaining female personalities that go on panel shows rather then recycling the same female comedians, i.e. people like Jamelia.

Maybe we will see some more non-self depreciating female comedians out of this, but I reckon they will ruin some great shows.

Not to mention that playing an instrument is something which has very fixed parameters: You're playing the same music, on the same instrument as your competitors. This is very different to stand up comedy.

Read the link I posted. 30% of the gain was attributed to blind auditions.

There's so many more examples I could use (such as this one on black players in football). Comedy is very subjective but it's clear that comedians are being booked on merit.

I don't think you quite get my point... 30% gain might have been the result of more women applying therefore you will automatically get an increase in the number of females being selected. You need to take into account the ratio of male/female before blind auditions and during blind auditions to see if such increase is a direct result of the blind audition or more females applying between the date range specified.

But "entertainers" who are actually entertaining outside of their regular duties are pretty few and far between and while they work on something like never mind the buzzcocks, on a show like 8 out of 10 cats it only works if the panels are comedians.

Fortuantely that show is not BBC.

On one hand this rule means we should get a greater variety of people on panel shows, which is great, and more are likely to have boobs, which is great.

But then again, I don't know of that many funny women on TV. I like Sandy Toksvig, Victoria Coren, and thats almost it.

I get your point. I'm saying that the research specifically states that the blind auditions accounted for 30% of the gain. Other factors such as more women applying and changes in orchestra composition accounted for the rest.
