Hello,

Not upgraded in years, until fairly recently when i bought a new Gfx card and psu. I noticed that 4Gb isnt enough these days with teh latest Games, whilst running music, and multiple browsers etc.

Just wanted to know what ram and how much I should get, as they no longer sell My 2x2Gb OCZ.(not looking for wallet busting stuff either)

Here is my spec.

* QuadCore AMD Phenom II X4 Black Edition 965, 3400 MHz (Titan Fenrir Evo CPU Cooler)
* 2 x 2GB OCZ Gold XTC OCZ3G1600LV2G DDR3
* Asus M4A79XTD EVO 790X Socket AM3 8 channel audio ATX Motherboard
* Sapphire Radeon R9 270 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express (New)
* Corsair Builder Series CX 600W V2 '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (New)
* Antec TwelveHundred Case
* 2 x 22" Samsung Syncmaster 226BW
* Windows 7 64-bit OS

So turn off the music and browsers and save some money? Back in 2006 when I played PC games I would kill any service/program that wasn't 100% necessary to the game I was about to play.

yeah back in 2006,but 2013 with modern games 4gb will limit your performance in gaming (with some games not all though)

RAM is relatively cheap, if he's here that means he wants to buy something, why sacrifice your desktop experience if you've got a little cash to spend to remedy the problem?

Gb means gigabit, what you mean is GB which means gigabyte. There's a huge difference between them.

It's nitpicking, when referring to RAM it doesn't really matter if they're saying GB, Gb, gB or gb or gigabyte or gigabit. You still know what they mean with no confusion whatsoever.

It's not nitpicking, I'm pointing out factual information. Lots of people don't know there's any difference between the two at all, or even know what a gigabit is.

Now he knows for the next time he wants to talk about gigabytes or gigabits, and you act like this is an issue? Why is expanding your knowledge a bad thing?

So he should get 8GB of ROM then?

The cheapest solution is to get another 2x2GB kit and manually set the speed, timings and voltage to match your current kit.
YOUR BASKET
1 x TeamGroup Elite 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (TED34GM1600HC11DC01) £32.99
Total : £36.90 (includes shipping : £3.26).

However that's not really ideal and if I remember correctly there's a chance it won't work at all, so the safest solution is of course to get a fresh 2x4GB kit, any of the following will do:

Definitely not an issue, it's good. But I think posting JUST to point it out is a bit... prudent? For want of a better word? A bit hypocritical as that's what I did to you but your prudence started it :p

Btw OP, in the rjk Christmas sale section, there's still a few kits of 8GB OCZ Gold RAM 1600mhz for only £46.

Phenoms didn't like having all 4 dimm slots populated at all - it put too much stress on the IMC or something like that. Long story short it really limited overclock perforance.

Speaking of which, the OP has a decent board and very decent cooler for its time so get overclocking that chip! Should be able to get 3.8ghz easily, if its a good chip then even 4.0-4.1ghz is possible!

I keep thinking about going up to 16 GB :eek:

Between mining, work and the odd bit of gaming and VM's, 8GB can seem limiting! Only issue is, the Corsair vengeance 8GB kit that I bought 2.5 years ago for £35, now retails for £65!

On a similar note, every so often while mining, windows will complain that I'm low on RAM, but task manager tells me only 4-5GB is in use! Anyone come across that?

Not to be pedantic, but pedantic is the word you are looking for. :D

OP, get another 2x2GB kit to take you up to 8GB. That should do for a good while.

Well yes pedantic, but I was thinking sort of the blunt way it was said with no help given alongside, sort of rude but not quite?

Hard to explain...
