840 Pro Vs the Evo, what's the difference?

i want a 500GB SSD very soon (maybe today) + a graphics card. but am stuck as to which one to get. with £120 difference between the EVO and the PRO that EVO sure seems a tempting money saver that i could plough into my Graphic Card purchase.

so...

1) what's the difference, speed / performance / reliability
2) i have a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 X58 will this be ok for either of these drives?
3) i heard the 750GB EVO is better to get as it has more cache is this correct?

Thank in advance! :)

Paul

you will only see a maximum of 250 to 260gb read/write on that board, maybe slightly more on the marvell controlled sata3 speed ports, you wont see the drives rated speeds of 500mb read/write though

the main difference is the nand memory used in the pro being mlc vs the cheaper tri level nand on the evo

speed wise you probably wont tell, but the pro version might last longer under heavy use, thats not to say the evo wont last 10yrs+

if I were you id pick the evo or the cheaper crucial m500 with that board,

edit: to see the full ssd rated read/write speeds you'd need a newer board with intel sata3 speed controlled ports

that's a shame i know its an old board, but I thought a SATA 3 port would be all i would need. guess not. why is this if you don't mind me asking. there are 2 revisions on this board and think i have the 2.0 version.

its just down to it being an early/first sata3 controller, they aren't as fast/reliable as the newer intel controlled sata3

but for that you would need new board/cpu,the intel sata2 ports will be fast enough, could try the marvell ports aswell maybe 320-400 read/write on the marvell

any ssd is leaps and bounds over a mechanical hdd performance wise

For SSDs the sequential read/write rates are not the main benefit. In general use you would rarely notice the difference once it gets over 200-300 (unless you were copying large files). The real benefit is in latency & random access of small files which for home desktop users, versus an HDD, all SSDs excel at on all controllers.
Just get an EVO or any other SSD of comparable price and use the extra money on a better graphics card where you will really notice the difference.

Just my 2 cents.

Ordered :) thx guys,

One last question if i may, i have a Antec p182 case but need to find a mount for the EVO does anyone know which ones will fit in the P182 drive bay slots that i could buy?

Thanks

P

You might see some benefit from the RAPID mode on the 840 EVO on an interface thats less than SATA3 - it doesn't really do much for SATA3 but theoretically the gains should me more pronounced when you don't have quite as fast connection to the drive.

Thanks all, very helpful :)

i have one more question though.

As this is my first ever SSD and setting this up is new to me i have a question regarding AHCI and IDE. currently my set up is set to IDE in The Bios. it is set that way as when a friend and i were setting it up orginally i we could not get it to work when we set it to AHCI.

my friend deduced that it was MY SATA DVD drive that was causing it as it was not compatible. i have asked people in work who said give it a try, which i will do with the new SSD. but im guessing it may happen again.

so

1)should i just get a new DVD drive if this is found to be still a problem?
2) is ACHI essential for SSD ( or beneficial)
3) is there a work around with this that i could try?

many thanks for everyone responses :)

if its a sata dvd drive it should work in ahci,if its an ide dvd drive with a thicker ribbon cable it wont work in ahci mode only ide mode

you need to be in ahci mode regarding ssd's for the best performance

840 PRO now has RAPID mode too ;)

Did I notice a difference? nah! - Benchies? - flipping destroys em lol

its a SATA cable its a SATA drive. so from what you say it should all work when i put in the new drive.

first off,

The good...

Ahci is working which is good. and it all installed ok,

the not so good...

im only getting about 300 for seqentual read and writ and about 4-5k on IOPs according to Magician. which i know you guys warned me about with 3g/s ports.

what im confussed at is when im updateing windows, via the windows update it took ages to install the updated, where i am our internet connection is shockingly slow. and it took even longer to install the updates. never seen it take that long to install from what i recall. any thoughts?

so im a little concerned by the HDD although it is faster for sure.

the bad.

with this i bought a Gigabyte GTX 780, not tested it in games yet or in 3D time ran out last night. but i am experiencing weird noises coming from the card, firstly it was a whining sound coming from one of the fans and i am also getting a strange. occasional eletric sound like some somthing is powring up and reseting. its rather weird. im also not convinced the graphic drivers are installed right eiather ( gonna doa fresh install this evening)

has anyone experinced this with this card, i may post this on the graphic cards section.

so yeah day one and things are ok but not smooth sailing. any thoughts help welcomed

you set the sata ports to ahci mode before windows install?

the whinning could be old hdd spinning up,it whines then a click? or could be gpu coil whine

ok, i have had a good look in the manual that came with my MB and it does say i have a Sata 6G/s port. previously and during the install i had it in the Sata 2 port. which im not sure has messed things up or not, im relying on you guys telling me i should reinstall or not?

anyway i have connected it set it up to ACHI and now im getting
402 SEQ Read
248 SEQ Write
51828 IOPS Random read
44340 IOPS random write

in Magician, so any pointers welcome. Thanks Wazza i did set it to ACHI mode before installing windows but like i said above i did this on a SATA2 port.
the card so far hasn't made that noise again, i have teh side off it so i'll keep listening over the next few days and see.

im guessing that the Marvell ports are what im now on, hence the SEQ Read increasing to 402?

Thanks

P

Coil whine? or completely different? I've not really had any noises from my GB 780 GHZ other than screeching from coil whine if its rendering over 300fps which is fairly normal.

yeah you'll be on the marvell ports with those speeds

if it was like a whine/whistle sound then a click,it was probably your old hdd spinning up from power saving mode, mine does it

you'll here that now that the os is on your ssd

if its a varied high pitched electrical whine sound esp in game menu's then its coil whine, its fine alsong you dont hear it through speakers or headphones and in the actual game itself

none of my old HDDs are connect, only my SSD is currently in. just played a game for a bit, no noise the Fan speed didn't even raise up, Amazing card. might of just needed a bit of running in.

but will still see how it goes for the moment.

thanks guys :)
