That's absolutely true, but I don't believe the squad is nearly as bad as some people suggest. The squad is weaker now AND the manager so far is utterly clueless, which is the issue. If the squad was really that bad we'd probably be outside of the top ten with these performances.

The squad (certainly in key areas) is ***** awful, admittedly not helped by rock bottom mentality (and certain players reportedly causing agro)
Personally I would say the only players worthy of top four teams at Utd are Mata, Rooney & DDG (Im excluding RvP only because of his injury record in combination with his age) with Januzzaj looking very very promising indeed.
I have always supported Carrick but I think its time Utd have a proper hard tackling DM / CM to take over Carrick's mantle.
Lack of CL football will impact the quality of players you can attract though, regardless of off the pitch investment levels.

Indeed, worst case scenario we can sack Moyes, get someone else in, let them spend £150m, and soon sort ourselves out. Easier said than done, but it can be done with the right backing. Backing I believe the Glazers will be happy to provide as they need the club to do well, top four stuff at least.

By looking at the results ending september your revenue was up to 98mil for the quarter, but your operating expenses were up to 90mil for the quarter. Football clubs are growing to sustain increased spending essentially. Wage expenditure increased by 30% in the same period that revenue grew 30%.
You made a 20mil profit in the quarter ending September the previous season and a 0.3million loss(I believe after things like amortization is taken into account) despite the increased revenue.
Generating cash doesn't mean anything, you can generate 200mil a quarter, but if you're spending 250mil to generate the 200mil, you're making a huge loss.

Most players will essentially have a contract that grows(and shrinks) with the commercial revenue at the club. So revenue increases 30%, say 20% of that ends up going back out instantly in increased wages for players.
So sign a deal that brings in 60mil more than the previous deal a year... and 40mil of it will automatically increase existing wages. So that 60mil extra a year became 20mil, buy a 20mil player who is on 5mil at least a year, and after buying 1 20mil player you are now 5mil worse off for the year(but 15mil up the year after that. Buy 2 players at 20mil, 10mil wages for the two, 40mil in transfer fee's, 40mil in wages over 4 years, that is 4 years of that 20mil "extra" you get from the next 60mil more commercial revenue.
Wages grow as revenue grows, revenue is zero indication of profitability or how much you can spend on players. It enables a club to offer higher wages, which is good, but doesn't massive increase the amount they can spend. Utd certainly can't afford to just waste 30mil on Fellaini, nor whatever silly wages he's ended up on.
Aguerro arrived at City before they had CL football (edit actually my fault I thought he did, and I just worked it out wrong just now)
There are also enough up and coming players with a lot of promise where EPL football will be a big enough inducement even without considering the club name and respect in the world community (even if not on here lol)
And then the likes of Rio , Evra and Vidic leave the club and save over £300K a WEEK
And while we will have to bring in new players, they wont be on the same level of wages that those players were on.

Wasnt he paid obscene wages though? And they had to pay over the odds to get him too I think, nearly 40 mill
Without CL football you'll have to pay higher wages to attract the same level of players leaving..

as above I think Im wrong in my original statement.
40 mil seems a snip now though (and with the new tv deal I doubt the wages are THAT bad)
Its still possible to attract those kinds of players though.
Does anyone know what this means? is he blaming the players for not performing like they did last season? is he saying that it's the best he can do (and Ferguson was the difference last season)? or is he just bumbling incoherently out of anger at being questioned?

Hopefully Rosicky will start tonight, I'm in favour of dropping Ozil to the bench for this one, he was absolutely dire against Liverpool and he's been out of form for weeks now. Wouldn't mind seeing Chamberlain play through the middle, Arteta doesn't look mobile enough since coming back and we're really missing Flamini who tends to be everywhere in the midfield.
Not really sure if I can call a winner, I mean I'm not sure how Koscielny and Mertesacker are going to cope with Moyes' incredibly intricate attacking system which obviously only a person of high footballing intellect could even begin to understandp). But then it's United and no matter how crap they're doing currently - they always beat us.
