Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [7th - 12th February 2014]

Chelsea have beaten off competition from Manchester City — who had been clear favourites to sign the exciting Belgium international but grew frustrated at the negotiations — Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur after becoming the only club who would go close to meeting the forward’s demands.

City are thought to have walked away from the deal last week with Spurs giving up some time ago. Hazard, currently on international duty and preparing to face England in a friendly this weekend, indicated to Chelsea on Saturday that he was set to accept their offer and yesterday took to the social media site Twitter to announce that he had “made up my mind”, adding last night: “I’m signing for the Champions League winner.”

Chelsea will pay a fee of around €40 million (£35.3 million) to Lille, with Hazard having demanded wages of £4.6 million a year net of tax, so around £9  million a year for his new employer. That averages out at £170,000 a week.

In addition his agent, John Bico, who has conducted an aggressive auction has made it clear that he wants a fee of £6 million.

This was all at the time that City were complaining about agents taking the **** with regards to payments for players they were looking at.

Fair enough, sounds like Hazard said go find me the most money with a CL team then.

170k after tax? are most footballers wages quoted as after tax? How much is it without?

My word, a team struggling for results and playing nigh on 80 minutes coming back from a goal down are getting slated for celebrating?

GTFO :D

Some ****ing idiots in here :D

Indeed, although that Rooney celebration is perfect to rub in the noses of those bleating on about what did Liverpool/Arsenal win this weekend due to people being happy with a win.

Rooney's celebration is pretty mild compared to most of mine.

EDIT: Actually Moyes' celebration was pretty desperate, don't mind Rooney, he put the work in.

It's bottom of the table Fulham at home who are playing last year's champions sorry but this is cringe worthy. If it was like the last 2-3 minutes i could understand but there was like 10 mins+ still to go.

God knows but it's going to be a fair amount, fair play to City in that instance, they didn't want to play his games so pulled out.

I actually agree  Moyes' celebration was more relief though than being a **** though.

My celebration when it went in was more like one of your posts when a decision goes against Liverpool.

To be fair Rooney expects United to close that out, if I was him I'd assume that was a win under Ferguson anyways. Moyes on the other hand was a bit like look at me, I've done it

They had been playing against a team that had parked the bus for most of the match and were finding them difficult to break down, should they just walk off and shake hands?

It's any excuse to knock United on here at the moment, when it gets to moaning about how they celebrate goals it's going too far and shows you up for what you are :)

You repeatedly punched your keyboard shortcuts for swear words whilst screaming the other team slipped brown envelopes to the ref? odd.

come back when you actually know something rather than just guessing

Its HIGHLY unlikley that all the players who arrive on brand new contracts will be on the same wages that the likes of Vidic and Evra and Rio have been getting after 6 - 10 years at the club.

Of course there will be high profile players who may or may not sign in the summer, but there may well also be those high profile youngsters who need to show they deserve to play for Utd and deserve the pay that goes with that high profile attention etc and so wont be on as high weekly /annual wages.

Wages are below 60% of revenue , and thats before the huge increases in TV deals, shirt sponsorship / kit deals which will kick in within 18 months.

You think it's highly unlikely that new players will sign for the amount they are on? Fellaini is back up quality at best and is on what Evra is on(more or less), Mata is a good player and is on more. To look at actual evidence of players signed already and then suggest most players will sign for less than Evra-Rio is frankly, nuts.
Mata on 140k a week, Fellaini... I mean Fellaini is apparently on around 90k and he's no where near good enough. Then lets point out that I didn't say every player who signs will make what Vidic/Rio do, I will happily say that many players you sign in the next 2-3 years will make significantly more. For instance, Mata is making more, RVP is making more. Those are the quality of players Utd actually need to improve.

As for youngsters needing to prove how much they are worth.... lol. Hazard, the reason you didn't get Hazard, was money. Chelsea offered more. If you try and sign the next Hazard, and you offer 50-100k because Utd think that player has to prove himself before getting a big wage.... but 4 other clubs offer the big wage upfront, what does history tell you?

If Utd consistently offer less cash than other clubs, they'll simply sign no quality players.

Top notch players today are signing for 200k a week, hot prospects like Hazard are signing for 160-180k a week, players like Fellaini are making 90k a week. Yet vidic/rio are apparently around the 110k mark, Evra around the 95k mark.... Welbeck, utterly useless, signed for 85k, he's, incredibly generously, a squad player, on very very close to what Evra is on. Times change.

I would say the majority of first team players Utd need to be signing will be signing for more than Vidic/Rio are on, not the minority. Only the proper youngsters(<18) or experienced/squad players, IE not first teamers, will be signing for less.

As for wages being 60% of wages, yes, I'm not sure what you're point is, you made a minor loss in the quarter ending September. Wages are the biggest, but not only cost for clubs. Despite wages only being 60% of the clubs revenue, you made a loss.

With the new commercial deals, I'd expect Utd to effectively be right where they are now financially in 2-3 years. Another 100mil coming in, increased wages across the board.

Every new player you sign knows about the incoming commercial deals, they know how much money Utd will be bringing in two years from now, and they'll negotiate for a piece of the pie.

Vidic and those guys are the better value players you have in the squad(or where when available and at their best). The guys you are losing all signed when 100k a week was still huge for most players, now it's borderline average for a half decent player in terms of top 4 clubs.

Have you seen the YouTube clip of the Irish girl after Juve knocked Celtic out of the cl last season? That's how imagine you Purdy.

170k before tax, that says he wanted around 4.5mil a year after tax, which is around 90k a week. Lots of people talk about after tax because, well, every country is different. If the agent tells all the clubs he's looking for around 80-90k after tax, then the country can work out how they do that. Some countries have dodgy tax situations, payments via other companies in other countries. I believe the EPL lets 10% of wages be tax free, or paid from abroad under the belief that image rights generate money outside the UK so there should be some allowance for that.

Essentially 90k after tax is the target anyone in Europe who wanted Hazard had to meet, here that seems to be around 170k, in Monaco it would be give or take, 90k, in Spain, maybe 150k, maybe 200k.

Ultimately all the agent and player care about is the amount they get after tax so that is the target they hand out.

My bad, didn't read the 4.6mil net of tax, thought I read 9
