What film did you watch last night?

Lone Survivor - I don't get why the village had an uproar of protection towards the soldier, when at the start they didn't do anything when one of their own got beheaded?!

This was part of the uncertainty when it happened in real life; why did the village go so far out of their way to help the soldier?

After watching the film I looked it up, information can be found here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Red_Wings#Afghans_who_aided_Luttrell
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pashtunwali

It essentially comes down to a long-standing tradition/custom of their people:
"in accordance with the cultural tradition of Pashtunwali, whereby asylum (Nanawatai) is offered to a person to protect them from their enemies."

The film is packed full of fictional bits and the beheading at the beginning was made up, it never happened. However IRL the Pashtun code of honor called Pashtunwali which protected him only applies to Strangers not other villagers.

12 Years a Slave, 10/10.

I came out of the cinema feeling like I had been assaulted, some scenes are literally difficult to watch and made me feel physically uncomfortable, some people actually LEFT a couple of them. For those who have not seen it yet and are considering it, make sure you go in knowing you are not about to be entertained, there is nothing entertaining about 12 Years a Slave.

It is however an incredible film, there is not an actor in it that doesn't deserve an award for their performance

Thor: The Dark World, 4/10.

Probably the weakest Marvel film so far for me, just felt disjointed and slow, once again Loki steals the show but this time so completely he actually ruins it a little, or he would if Natalie Portman hadn't gotten there first. It just lacked all depth and couldn't hold my attention.

Romancing The Stone. Silly 80s cheese, but good fun and pretty entertaining. Michael Douglas was better than I expected him to be.

Oooo I'd forgotten I've got both that and the Jewel of the Nile...

So I'm gonna watch Trading Places, Romancing the Stone, Jewel of the Nile, Short Circuit 1 & 2 and even Hackers (saw an episode of Numb3rs with Fischer Stevens in the other day!!) over the next week or so!! :)

That new Jack Ryan movie, not bad although Keira ****ing Knightly just ruins every single damned movie she ever plays in :(.

Some good action sequences and not a bad storyline...not worth going to the cinema to watch it in all honesty but i was bored last night so dragged the missus with me lol.

6/10

A Wolf On Wall Street - 8/10.

A bit overly long but it had some really funny moments in. Jordan Belfort is an utterly hateful character from the first minute to the last and I was a bit miffed that he even got a cameo at the end. The self-narrative of it is very much Goodfellas esque (given the director, this is hardly unexpected), but it did feel a little bit "stolen".

Decent, but not the amazing film that a lot of people are raving about.

Not bad for free though. I've had private healthcare through work for 5 years and have only just realised that I can get free cinema tickets for everyone on my plan every week at Cineworld! Great deal.

Dallas Buyers Club - 4/5 - Great acting, gripping story.

Eyes Wide Shut - 4.5/5 - Very interesting themes, surprised I hadn't seen it.

Enough Said - 3.5/5 - Solid dramedy. Worth a watch.

Upstream Colour - 4.5/5 - Immersive and abstract. Recommended.

Wolf of Wallstreet - 4/5 Brilliant film and great acting by DiCaprio. It was slow at times however.

Fanboys - 3/5 Great film to pass the time, even more so if you're into the starwars films.

Rush - 5/5 Excellent telling of the story - I couldn't say exactly how close to real it was, but it felt believable, and the characters were interesting. There could maybe have been a few longer shots of the racing rather than jumping around, but that's to be expected from modern cinema.

After Earth, 4/10 - I could tell that Will Smith was somewhat throttled with the shocking writing and plot. His son was pretty terrible and the story couldn't have any more predictable.

Taxi Driver, 9/10 - Can't believe that I hadn't seen this film yet. De Niro was superb. I wish he was like that in recent films, he seems to have lost all of his grittiness as of late. Story was great and the writing was great. Will probably be picking it up on Blu ray. (e: very tempted to give this a 10, but I think I'll watch it again to make up my mind :p)

Iron Man 3, 8/10 - I went into this thinking it was going to be rubbish, and I was pleasantly surprised at how wrong I was. It kept me entertained all the way through, which given that it's a 120 minute picture I thought was impressive for a film of its sort. They brought the end together very well, I wasn't angry at how they did it which doesn't happen very often! Definitely worth a watch and, in my opinion, better than the first which I gave a 7, and the second which I gave a 6.
