I don't understand why there would be so many options either, just male and female will do. Not hard to class yourself in one of those two surely?

Maybe add another option of "Other" if you feel a stupid need to be politically (in)correct.

Our patient database has male, female, transgender or undisclosed. Ok, you can split trans into TG:male-to-female and TG:female-to-male, and that will give you a total of 5 options. Sure, under the a/s/l bit, you can write your own personal statement like "socialite" or "emo guy", or "rocker", anything you like, but 50 options for gender I find ridiculous.

Don't see the point of it except more pandering to silly things. Probably a calculated selective business move to exploit the rainbow pound by Facebook anyways. Science says your gender is either male or female. The description after that can be anything you want and there is a nice big box for it.

Facebook has made a small change that benefits some of its users and has no negative impact on anyone else. It really shouldn't be that controversial.

Gender isn't quite so binary as people think.

You have people born with two sets of DNA or even two sets of sexual organs (chimeras for example), besides - this is about identity not scientific classification.
