GTX 780 ti and 600w PSU

I've recently installed a GTX 780 ti. All was well for a few hours of use but I've started to experience system freezes, particularly in Skyrim and Metro Last Light. I'm thinking these two are my most GPU hungry games (Skyrim is highly modded) and my PSU may not be able to keep up.

These crashes occur by the game freezing and no ability to exit (Alt-Tab or Ctrl-Alt-Del). I end up having to force shutdown by holding the power button.

My spec is as follows:

CPU COOLER: Noctua NH D14

CPU: Intel Core i5 (i5-2500K) OC to 4.5GHz

MOTHERBOARD: Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 (B3) Motherboard Intel Core Socket 1155 Intel Z68 Express SATA RAID ATX Gigabit LAN (rev. 1.0)

Graphics Card: Gigabyte 3x Windforce OC GTX 780 ti

Memory: Kingston 8GB (2x 4gb) Memory Kit 1600MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 240-pin DIMM with Intel XMP Support

Power Supply: Corsair CX600 V2 Builder Series 600 Watt 80 PLUS Certified Power Supply Unit

Any help appreciated

Does it run ok when everything is at stock settings CPU + GPU and mobo Bios and drivers upto date?

It just might be your PSU.

600watts is enough for that system. How old is the PSU?

I would start by checking things like:

1)Take GPU out and put it back in
2) Check both power leads are properly into the GPU
3) Check cpu and system temperatures while games are running.
4) Check drivers etc

What was your old GPU? Do you have a second system you can test the 780ti in?

Tricky one, your PSU should be up to the task of running one 780Ti and your CPU clocked high as it is, but you can never be sure with these things (I was running 780Ti SLI on a 750w PSU until recently). Also, Skyrim modded isn't the most stable thing to test with.

Download Heaven 4 benchmark and run/ loop that at absolute max settings. It's usually a very good stress test.

Yeah everything up to date and ran perfectly fine with my previous GTX 670. I just wanted to make sure this was the problem before shelling out £100 for a much more capable one. Kinda short for cash after buying the 780 ti!

It all depends on the make/model not all PSU's are equal, there's a bit of a difference between a GTX 660 to a 780 TI, especailly when PC is overclocked as well even with that 600w PSU.

Well it ran perfectly in Heaven, Highest cpu temp 53c and gpu temp 68c. Here's the result file:///C:/Users/Nigel/Documents/Unigine_Heaven_Benchmark_4.0_20140215_1652.html

It's about the Amps needed not just watts.

CX600 provides 40 amps total - 780ti alone needs 42 amps

I'd be looking at the psu not quite being up to the job

Spot on whyscotty thats what i was trying to say in my last post l keep forgetting about the AMPS never mind the Watts.

Even though the psu has a pretty low amp rating for a 600w unit (40A = 480w) it should still run fine.

His system will not use over 350w in normal usage which leaves 130w spare. The cx is a budget unit though so maybe its struggling.

I'd put the cpu back to stock and try again to rule this out.

This is total system power consumption with a 4770k system and doesn't even take efficiency into account. Real usage is lower

Yes a budget unit his GTX 660 fine , 780 TI A big difference in watts + amps needed. Its how good the PSU maintains the same out put under load hence buget and 80+ rated PSU's.

Have a look at OCUK builds where one GPU is used governs the PSU installed, about minimum 450w power Supply upto Premium 600W 80+ Rated Power Supply for a GTX 780Ti 3GB .

Not a Buget CX600W PSU WHY?

If you say so

Unless you have a card manufacturer who ignores pci specifications then that's the limit. The extra 2 pins on an 8pin connector tell the card it can supply 150w through that cable, 75w for a 6 pin.

Well they have to choose 1 psu. Doesn't real prove anything, just assumptions.
