Samsung Evo 250GB - Secure Erase Time ?

it writes 0's instead of 1's to the drive,no idea if data can still be recovered but a long format in windows should be enough followed by a secure erase

it leaves 0's in each nand cell ready to receive data, format writes 1's so it first has to write 0 then 1 before it can write data taking longer, and full format is fine for ssd's

Secure erase is not the same as writing zeroes to the drive. A full format in Windows is not recommended.

Thank you :)

ATA Secure Erase is part of the ATA ANSI specification and when implemented correctly, wipes the entire contents of a drive at the hardware level instead of through software tools. Software tools over-write data on hard drives and SSDs, often through multiple passes; the problem with SSDs is that such software over-writing tools cannot access all the storage areas on an SSD, leaving behind blocks of data in the service regions of the drive (examples: Bad Blocks, Wear-Leveling Blocks, etc.)

When an ATA Secure Erase (SE) command is issued against a SSD’s built-in controller that properly supports it, the SSD controller resets all its storage cells as empty (releasing stored electrons) - thus restoring the SSD to factory default settings and write performance. When properly implemented, SE will process all storage regions including the protected service regions of the media.

Full format is pointless because it results in unnecessary writes and doesn't guarantee 100% elimination of data.

Thanks for the extra replies.

I couldn't get Secure Erase to work.
It said it doesn't work with Win 8, so I created a boot USB stick.
The screen display that appeared in DOS, was just a mess of scrambled text.
I couldn't even figure out what I needed to do.

So I used CCleaner, Kill Disk and a full format on it ;)

CCleaner + 3 stage wipe or secure erase

Such a brilliant application!

Have tested Recuva and found many of the deleted files corrupt/unrecoverable or don't appear so it shows it works

ssd's leave no trace of data behind unlike mechanical hdd's

An SSD won't leave a trace of data if secure erase is used. A full format can't guarantee 100% elimination of all data because regular software tools can't access all the storage area on an SSD. Full format (Vista and above) is fine for regular HDDs.

I couldn't get Secure Erase to work.

Did you try Samsung Magician?

Secure Erase is to get back 100% performance not just format the SSD.

If you decide to reinstall windows and you even full format a SSD like a normal HDD it may not be 100% performance.

Takes a few secs to run a Secure Erase, I am not sure if the version built into my Asus Mobo does a good job but Parted Magic does (not longer free from what I read).

Bit of a bump here, but would appreciate some help from you peeps.

I'm looking to secure erase my Samsung 120gig 840. Now I've made a bootable disc in Samsung Magician, but when I restart the computer and it loads up, I can't read the screen, as the font is all garbled.. How do I fix this and actually secure erase the drive?

Cheers :)

If you use the bootable version of Secure Erase from Samsung Magician and the text appears to be all scrambled and blurry, you need to hit Esc twice, it will go back to a DOS screen, then type:

segui0.exe /c /2

It will then load the DOS version and just follow the wizard - also that it is a ZERO not an O after segui. Secure Erase takes about 30 seconds!

You're welcome fella!

I just wish they would tell people about it in Magician at the time the bootable media is made, so people dont get confused when they cant read the text lol
