I am using the following in my sig and was wandering since I am a usb header short, due to one being filled by the h100i usb connection.

Do you have to use this usb ?
How many people use the software and is it any good(corsair link) ?

Can I connect the usb header once set it up (ie fan speed) then disconnect the usb header and then disconnect the usb header. then plug in a usb cable from my case so I can sue all of my usb ports on the front of my case ?

is there a better alternative ?

Thank you for the advice

I've been using these coolers and software on AMD based systems for a while now with no software issues. Most issues are down to the fact that some usb devices won't play together. Most of these issues an be corrected by shuffling usb devices around til it works. There's a mine of info out there.
You can connect it to an external usb via a USB-A to mini B cable (popular with mobile phones these days). You can connect permanently that way.
If you want to use the CL software then you must set the cooler and software up while connected to the permanent usb connection, ie you can't move to a different usb once it's installed, it'll be like adding another one.

Just remember one thing for me. Don't flash the firmware unless you do have a problem. There's no point risking a bricked cooler just for the latest firmware.

Hope this helps ;)

Corsair Link is generally stable and fine but nothing spectacular. You can get the same functionality with the connectors on your motherboard and speedfan, it's just less fancy.

You can set it up and then disconnect the USB connection. The software is OK, nothing special

I ended up buying one of these so that I could connect my PSU & the corsair link dongle up permanently

This tbh. I actually use my CPU PWM header to control the rad fans, pump RPM feed is plugged into SYS_1 fan header, all monitored by OpenHardware Monitor.

I only plugged the USB in and installed the software just to set the LED colour although I didn't use the supplied cable, I just used a USB A to mini-USB cable I have. Saves messing with my USB headers.

You sir are a star.

I just used a spare cable I had from an old phone plugged it into the h100i, then poked the cable out the back of the case via a tube crommet and plugged it into the back of the case thus allowing me to use the usb 2 header for the case.
thank you very much you saved me £13 on a internal usb 2 hub.

Thank you
