Power while Camping?

Go on, be one of those cretins that has a generator running all the time keeping everyone awake.

There was one when I went to silverstone a few years ago which was almost always on. There was overwhelming cheers when it actually got turned off the once along with variations of "thank **** for that"

If its on after midnight at Litchlake it gets confiscated.

So any other suggestions for quiet power other than Fuzz's?

I was camping once and there was a tourer next to us. I kid you not, in the awning was a huge projector, sofa and surround sound system. He had a sky dish all rigged up as well. Was watching the premier league.

All that crap totally ruins camping for yourself and the people around you.

The website specifically says generators are welcome, but there's a midnight curfew which is perfectly fair. I doubt a few generators will drown out the music and noise.

We have deliberately chosen the generator friendly lively noisy campsite.

The website might but the punters wont ;)

I went to the F1 at silverstone a couple years ago with my mate. Got tickets for free and tbh wished I had just sold them on

Rained for the whole weekend, place was an absolute mudbath! Everywhere was just mud, the "car park" was just mud, around the track side is mud.

There was nothing interesting going on, no car displays, no vendors to look at. It was just horrifically expensive fastfood (like £7 iirc for some water?!) and F1 merch stands every 20 meters.

The F1 is boring, the cars come around the track, I was half a mile away at best, my ears bleed from the high pitched noise (which sounds great on TV), you have no idea whats going on, and the action on track is lame at best.

I stayed in a premier inn a couple miles away near a Tesco, glad I did so I could have a shower each night and clean my clothes. Worst weekend I have had for a while, almost called it a day after the Friday. Never again, just gonna watch it on Tv if I wanna see it.

moan over :P

Many years ago I knew somebody who spent a year or two living "In the Bush" in Tunisia. He had similar issues but a lot of people out there lived "Off grid" and there was an established procedure for catering for their electrical needs.

You rented batteries!

By that, I mean stonking great ones that weighed several hundred kilos!

The batteries would last about a week and then the battery man would come out to you and swap your flat one for a fully charged one.

The main advantages were that, they were silent, they were always on, and they were far to heavy for anybody to filch!

I wonder if you could rent some fork lift/milk float batteries for the week??

OK, maybe calling it camping is confusing people. Perhaps I should have said I will be staying in a field with a bunch of motorsport fans who would all rather spend money on beer and meat than pay for an overpriced quiet hotel :p.

Nobody is there to enjoy a nice camping holiday. Obviously I wouldn't dream of taking any of this stuff to a proper campsite or on a proper camping holiday.

Best sporting days out for me have always been horse racing. The national and the derby are great! there are other great meetings like glorious goodwood and royal ascot and the creme de la creme is Cheltenham.

You are still going to need two leisure batteries in my opinion, the bigger the better.

It's a piece of **** to wire up, all the reds go to positive and all the blacks go to negative (or the bodywork) :D

Split charger will come with instructions anyway.

Shame. But its not for everyone. 2012 was an exception for Silverstone.

I've camped and stayed in a motorhome in Spa, done hotels and driven to races in Europe and Silverstone, been to at least 1 F1 weekend each year for the last 9 years or so, and loved every minute. But it's not for everyone I accept that.

Where would I get this stuff and how much?

I wrote that in my original post!

Hahahaha this is the most ridiculous thing I've heard this year so far. A projector and games consoles ****ing LOL

OK, I'll humour your ridiculous idea.
You'll need...

Deep cycle leisure battery or two.. (borrow from any caravan owner you know)
A pure sine wave inverter. (1000w should be more than enough) Approx £120 Ahh eBay to the rescue.. £100 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2000W-100...-MOTORHOME-12V-DC-to-240V-AC-UK-/161064810221
A split charger. £44 off the bay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-6mtr-...d=100005&prg=1048&rk=2&rkt=5&sd=251439571836&

The car charges the deep cycle batteries via the split charger on the way there.
That should leave you enough reserve power in the leisure batteries to game, party, charge and light your tent for the weekend in SILENCE via the pure sine wave inverter, without your car battery going flat

DO NOT buy any sort of diesel/petrol powered generator.
You will have it thrown in the ditch in the middle of the night or they'll put a hole in your fuel tank... seen it happen.
No one wants to hear one of those things thudding away all weekend!, especially at night.

Do they allow generators on the camp sites?

You really want to be looking at a couple of 12v 100ah batteries.

There are car batteries that are around 100ah

As for charging phones and such, perhaps some portable powerpacks might be a good option or just charge them off the car socket.

What you need to do is work out how much power you need then weigh up this against what sort of power supply you can afford that is practical.

Phones and cameras will be from cig lighter chargers anyway I expect.

This is for the lighting and entertainment mostly. Ill have to look at the power draw of a Wii and a projector and some small speakers. Batteries sound like a much better option.

Before you asked though :p :D

Bah, who scrolls back up to previous posts :D

Just get some battery powered LED lights for when it's dark, and a gas powered fridge to keep your beer cold. Gas can then also be used for a stove. Much easier to fry bacon on a stove than it is on a BBQ.

Pay for the electric hookup :p

Liking the commitment, we talked about taking a projector to rewatch highlights on iplayer after the race but never got around to it the other year.

That is quite a cool idea, but where would you set the projector and screen up if it rains?
