I'm planning to build a new system to use as a media server. I want to run it with Linux (Ubuntu) and have it distribute my movies and music to all connected devices on the home network. I also want to be able to control it from my Windows 8 gaming PC (see Air540 log in my sig).

I want this new system to sit in my garage, and have only the power and network cables attached. Obviously all media devices will access files via the network, and I want my windows system to have a level of access in order that I will never have to plug any other peripherals into the new media server. It will just sit in the garage running 24/7 with no requirement to access it physically, other than for maintenance requirements.

On top of this, I want to have the option to pop graphics cards into it in future, and do some mining. I will probably go for the new nvidia maxwell cards, but may revise this if they turn out to be less productive than first anticipated, in which case I'll go for AMD.

I want to build the medusa server first and get it running, but obviously I need to include a Mobo and PSU that can cope with the future upgrade to mining.

Would appreciate any suggestions for hardware choice, and any comments on potential issues getting this system configured to do what I want.

At this stage, there's no need to spec actual GPU's as I'll decide in them later.

Many thanks in advance for any advice you guys can offer.

Edit to add, I already have a coolermaster 690II case, a 3TB HDD, various fans and I don't want to include an SSD as it won't be worth the money.

With regards to the music and movies would it be worth using something like Subsonic?

I'm not too fixated on any particular software, I'd be happy to try different distros to see what's best... All part of the fun really.

I've never used subsonic, so I'll definitely have a look at that.

How many graphics cards would you be looking to pop in?

To be realistic, probably 4 as an initial maximum. If I reach the stage where I want to add more, I can always upgrade the Mobo/PSU. If I could push that to allowance for 6 on the Mobo without spending too much extra, I'd be happy to do that. When I say 6, I mean 6 x GTX 750ti which would consume around 540watts.

I was thinking along the lines of a 750w PSU? Obviously if I decide to use more power hungry GPU's I need to either limit the number or buy a new PSU at the time. If I allow a Mobo that can handle 6 then at least I won't be upgrading that along with the PSU.

Just to recap, I'm not interested in buying the GPU's right now, I just want to make sure the Mobo and power supply can handle them when the time comes. I might actually end up not mining at all. Really want to leave the options as open as possible in that respect.

Tried to cover a few bases, only included the 1000W PSU because it's such a good deal at the moment:

1 x SuperFlower Leadex Platinum 1000W Fully Modular "80 Plus Platinum" Power Supply - White (NESF-011) £149.99
1 x Seasonic X-Series 850w '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply £149.99
1 x Seasonic 760w '80 Plus Platinum' Modular Power Supply £139.99
1 x Seasonic X-Series 750w '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply £129.95
1 x SuperFlower Leadex GOLD 750W Fully Modular "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £99.95
Total : £679.46 (includes shipping : £8.00).

If you end up not mining, they're all massive overkill though. Up to you if you want to go with something else like a Corsair to save money.

That's the dilemma really, I think I might end up using one or two gtx750 ti and be left with overkill as you say.

I'm on ipad so don't have the chrome plugin, but what do you think of this Corsair PSU at half the price? Potential problems?

I use it as part of my Debian build, it's really good and you can access the stuff from anywhere.

The Corsair PSU is ok but i dont think its modular, you could probably get better for the price

Modular, should really have took that into account! Ok, will keep hunting.

The Superflower model you posted is only £20 more so not too much of a stretch, but I'm sure I've read some bad reviews on the brand. Do you have personal experience of Superflower?

Edit: Just noticed the 5 year warranty. It's a contender!

Superflower are one of the best out there along with Seasonic which is what I have.

You can stream to IOS and Android - not sure about accessing via smart tv but don't see why not - does Smart Tv have a web browser?

It's not a web browser on smart tv, it's like an auto detect system. I'll install the software and give it a go, no harm in it. Thanks.

Doing some digging here...

Can't decide on PSU. Superflower is this week only offer, so will need to decide on it soon!

Gonna place the order in the next hour or so, so if anyone thinks a different component would suit, please post and let me know!
