Favourite Guitar Solo

Really tough to chose one in particular. Off the top of my head, some truly outstanding solos are:

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Extreme - Get the Funk Out
Oasis - Don't Look Back In Anger
Steve Vai - Bad Horsie
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood
Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine
Nirvana - In Bloom
Metallica - Blackened

Two in that list will raise eyebrows but I think they are spectacular.

Good list, solos dont have to be technically epic with hundreds of notes. They need to work musically and sometimes ie with Oasis, its simplicity that makes the perfectly balanced and legendary songs.

I see your point and I do think simple solos are the most timeless but, sometimes, a complex, mental, face-melting solo sounds amazing.

One of my favourites has to be Frank Zappa's Toad-o Line (Just after Wet T-Shirt Night on Joes Garage), I find that guitar work just incredible and moving.

It has most impact when listened to in context with how Wet T-Shirt night finishes and goes straight into this solo

Not the best technically, not my favourite band (by any stretch) and not even a particularly good song, but Richie Samboras solo in 'Dry County' gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Countless solos I prefer but this one I've been known to rewind several times when the track comes on. Just something about it!

Two I really love are from The Knack - 'My Sharona' and The Only Ones - 'Another Girl, Another Planet'. Just really fun, up-tempo solos. :)

EVH's from Michael Jackson's beat it.

It just works so well musically with the whole song. Plus I can't think of another solo so epic it caused the lead artist to change skin colour.

I could not help but laugh hard at that post ! Genuine LOL :D

I don't think I could pick a favourite solo. There are tons and tons out there and sure why I have some highly rated. No way I could say one is better than the other.

That said watching Coheed and Cambria play the Final Cut live at the Astoria in their Neverender "tour" which is pretty much a 18mins of glorious musical battling between Claudio Sanchez and Travis Stever. Really like Coheed such an underrated band imo both Claudio and Travis are excellent guitarist's

Now you've got me thinking....

Metallica - Damage Inc
Devin Townsend - Stagnant
Devin Townsend - Nobodys Here
Dire Straits - Telegraph Road
Van Halen - Eruption
Slayer - Angel of Death

These are quickly off the top of my head, no doubt ill think of a load more once i actually sit down to think about it!

I used to love the Comfortably Numb solo, but got bored with it after hearing it a billionmillion times.

A few from me:

China Drum - Cloud 9 - Link
Delays - Star Tiger, Star Ariel - Link
Idlewild - Stay The Same - Link

Manic Street Preachers - Condemned to Rock n Roll
Manages to get almost every classic rock solo riff cliche in :)

And one guilty pleasure :D

Europe - Ninja

A few that stick out instantly.

Coroner - Serpent Moves
Fates Warning - A World Apart
Savatage - Legions
WASP - Forever Free
WASP - Heaven's Hung In Black [two of them!]

The Coroner solo is the only one I would describe as epic. That whole album is exceptional.

Can't really go with anything other than Gilmour to be honest - I'm not hugely into fast solos and to my ears he just knows how to get the perfect sound from a guitar.

Megadeth have a lot of cool ones though

But a one I always love: 3m30s is when it gets going solo wise

There's more than a few that I can't do any work through, but most have already been mentioned. So I'm just going to add...

Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody *C'mon! Someone had to mention it. :D*
Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Rude Mood *From MTV Unplugged in particular*
The Beatles - While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Yeah, I know what you mean. I can't listen to anything from the appetite for destruction album anymore even though some of the solos are pretty awesome.
