290 or 290x from a 7950?

IMO the 290 is the better bet, the 290X doesn't justify the price difference. However if money is no object then go for it.

Also make sure the rest of your system is up to scratch.

Stick to the non reference designs as well as the reference coolers aren't really up to scratch.

cooler and noisier and want to heavily overclock go for the saphire tri x 290
cool and quieter and want to slightly overclock go for the msi oc 290

Reference design are for aftermarket coolers, I have a 7950 windforce but I wish I'd bought a reference design and fitted an Accelero Xtreme like I did for my old 4870x2, that was almost silent or at least a faint whoosh even running at full pelt gaming, unlike the windforce. The windforce's noise isn't a racket, but its noticeable and not a patch on my old cooler. :(

I have just ordered the MSI 290X as it seems a really good price, ive had two reference cards by vtx3d and in my personal experience I would avoid reference cards as they are too hot and too darn noisey.

Guess it comes down to what you want to spend.

£335 now :p

Just wondering if i should have got this instead of the Gigabyte Radeon R9 290 OC WindForce 4096MB which is die for delivery tomorrow. Slightly worried about the heat difference, after reading a couple of reivews the Gigabyte gives out a lot more heat (and throttling than the Saphire Tri-X).... unless ive read it wrong? :S

Sorry to hijack the thread just curious about something, do you guys think the 290 Tri X OC will have higher quality GPUs in terms of ASIC etc, or the GPUs in both the NonOC TriX and OC TriX are from the same batch with a different BIOS

You shouldn't worry too much, the Gigabyte is excellent. Plus I've not heard of anyone having problems with the Gigabyte cards.
