Death of the PC - The Gadget Show

I think the trouble is most people havent experienced a fast high spec PC with a SSD installed. It is just so much quicker and more productive to use than any console, phone or tablet.

I get this from clients a lot, "this computer is a nuisance, it takes AGES to load and is just generally so slow" - In part it's a lack of knowledge which I help them with but the other half is that they're unwilling to adopt new improvements in hardware every couple of years so are stuck on the same machine thinking it will remain speedy as it was on day 1. HDDs will slow down over time even if you reinstall Windows on it, an SSD won't and they're so cheap now it just makes sense to have one since it's the single biggest performance boost you can give any computer.

This will always go on though, right through to the point where hardware specs are relatively meaningless (Quantum computing?).

Gave up with this show over a year ago.

Personally from what I am seeing it looks to be back on the rise? Most of the people I knock around with anyways are getting back into PC gaming.

PC gaming will never die, but its not as dominant as it once was.

Were the same in work, but it's frustrating trying to educate some people at times! Only downside is capacity, but with cloud/server options a typical user doesn't need 500GB local storage.

Currently upgrading using 128GB Sandisk SSD's, £50.00 each, bargain!

Lol yes tv is obsolete. I am of the firm opinion that a desktop computer will never become obsolete.
A little piece of useless info for your geekery pleasure a colleague of mine (a nurse who claims she loves computers) thinks pc stands fpr Pentium computer :D:D:D

This, for their intended market it is obsolete and massively on the decline. Even in the business sector desktops are taking a dive. that's not to say they are dead as there will likely always be a use for them in some circumstances. But their market is dropping and will continue to drop for the foreseeable future.

I wouldn't want to go back to a pc(and unless games are released that require it, I won't. I connect laptop to a 24" screen & k&m if the heed/game arises). They're horrible as you have no choice but to sit at a desk. this is why so many home users and companies have replaced them with laptops. they aren't wasted money sat at a fixed point unable to be used most of the day.

Work is also laptops for office staff with docks, and tablets for mobile workers. Desktops about one per office for anyone to jump on. And take about 10mims to do anything. as they won't upgrade them.

This is nonsense. You don't need to be at a desk to play PC games on a PC that isn't a laptop. So yes you do have a choice.

Yes all that TV could have a terrible effect on peoples education for example their ability to spell ;) :p

Some great entertaining programs on the tv, but The Gadget Show isn't one of them. Went downhill after Suzi Perry left.

sorry, its not techno snobbery its just that the tv is a strangely abstract and uninvolving box in the corner of the room where as the internet and online media is much more engaging and targetted.
I dont need entertaining by tv or telling a tale which is usually skewed, i educated myself thats the power of the internet and why its so sucessful.

tv is obsolete. the only people left watching it are really old people and brain dead xfactor / come dancing tards whilst eating a tv dinner and dribbling ..

If I was bored I used to watch the Gadget Show, well, because Suzi = MILF.

Now I watch it to perv at Rachel, who is mighty fine to look at :p

Oh and I sometimes enter the competition.

As for advice on tech? I use the t'internetz :)

As for PC's being dead, I imagine that is true for a lot of people because they use tablets and their needs are fulfilled by such devices.

I also imagine it is untrue for just as many people because PC's are very good at things that a tablet/laptop is not good at, and generally the PC is the device at the top of the computing tree.

Versatility, power and speed. Simples

As for the TV being obsolete.........lolwut? It is probably one of the most used 'gadgets' in the world.

However, how/what the TV is used for is an entirely different discussion :)

My main pc has become a media hub that does all my entertainment, it's set up in traditional fashion with a monitor keyboard etc for gaming and browsing, but also plugged into a 42 inch 'monitor' and a hifi system for films and music.

Ive not watched tv for about 6 years.. I can't imagine not having a 'desktop' pc, although it's more of a server with desktop capabilities these days.

For quick sofa browsing though i use an android smart phone.

sad fact but mostly people use their phones or tablets for a quick browse.
but real work has to be done on a PC, Gaming (in my opinion) HAS to be done on a PC (Console what?)

The strange thing is, 99% of people i know with laptops use them as a desk top, they are stationary on a desk and may as well be a desktop, except more expensive.

Modern smart phones are perfect for Internet browsing convenience, but i honesty can imagine me ever carting around a laptop or tablet, they are just too clumsy, and they dont have the connectivity or storage space or interface to function well as an all singing entertainment hub.

I run a low spec desktop pc running Linux in my bedroom, but that's basically just a telly box.

When did a laptop diverge from being a "Personal Computer"? Same for a tablet really.

I think 'PC' refers to the IBM compatible which refers to most desktops and laptops running Windows and Linux. Then Mac is just a Mac. Tablets are usually Android or iOS systems, but the first tablet that I was aware of was the Paceblade back in 2003 and that ran Windows XP.

What irks me is when my old manager (may I hasten to add "IT manager") would ask "is it a PC or a laptop?"

These days my tablet and smartphone take up a lot of useage that would have otherwise been done on my laptop, my laptop has become more like a more portable desktop - 90% of the time its hooked into a monitor, keyboard and mouse plus connected to the mains wherever its used - for awhile I didn't even bother with a desktop given the laptop CPU is equivalent to a high end i7 2xxx series desktop CPU + 16 GB of reasonably fast RAM and the equivalent of a desktop GTX570 (via overclocking).
