• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

DirectX and OpenGL will start offering low-level access in order to reduce draw overhead

Where as with Mantle currently you can't even request the SDK, it's closed off and even once it moves out of alpha testing how do you think it will work with 3rd party vendor support?

You make it sound like there is never going to be a SDK, whereas that's exactly what will be available when it's ready to go.

They would have to go through very similar channels for specific changes, only this time with a competing vendor. It benefits everyone as you've rightly pointed out for MS to offer an equally beneficial interface

That's not how it works at all. There were some videos where the devs working with Mantle said the exact opposite. There is so much visibility of what is going on in Mantle, that instead of going to AMD for fixes, they are fixing their own code nine times out of ten.

Whooosh!!!

So you think an SDK that's tied in with a rival vendors GPUs is going to get swung out in the open like dollar for everyone to grab, namely Nvidia?

Obviously there are going to be procedural stages to go through. Just as there are with khronos or any interface. Obviously things would be a lot better if we lived in Care-a lot where everybody shares everything lol.

Typical MS knee jerk to competition, when i worked for Microsoft in the USA their mentality was "if its competition, buy it, or find a way to sue them and close them down" i see nothing has changed much over the years.

But they're doing neither of those things. Maybe they have changed? :)

lol Greg, in the other thread you claim you want to see Mantle do well and that it isn't dying anytime soon then you create a thread with a title like this :D

Stop with the baiting.

MS and OGL have done nothing for years, only now they clearly feel threatened by Mantle and are cranking up the rhetoric, but thats all it is right now, a lot of noise with nothing to show for it.

I will be happy if and when DX12 is here provided its all that, but right now it looks a lot like MS are just running round putting out fires.

Competition is good, but I don'[t think it'll be a quick turnaround for this stuff... so for now... AMD needs to get in the pants of developers and if it does... it really could take off for AMD optimised stuff. It's an exciting time as Mantle really is sensational for me and a lot of people... it's basically solved the problem we've had for years of CPU's just not being powerful enough compared to the GPU's we use.... epic stuff from AMD just when I was getting fed up of them

FFS people, this is MICROSOFT we are talking about - when on Earth have they actually delivered on any gaming initiative that was not in its own commercial interests? And even for those, how many times successfully?

Mantle is out and now suddenly MS is making a big song and dance? I know it is exciting but remember who MS are and what they have "achieved" for gaming and gamers in the last 5 years or so...

Works for me :D

Joking before I get lynched :p

This is my thought's on the matter. It's good news if they follow through but they don't usually follow through so it really is just news.

I hope Mantle succeeds to become the main API as it's fresh and new. AMD having a much bigger interest in pc gaming compared to Microsoft says to me they could make mantle into a much better gaming Api which would keep improving. Yes Mantle would have to be run by a third party company eventually and Nvidia would need to get onboard. If this did happen i think PC gaming would have a better chance of gaining Traction from the consoles. In a years time we should know more about where things are going whether that be DX12, mantle finished version or Opengl.

I also get the feeling Microsoft don't get gamers as the Xboxone is a step back from what made the xbox360 such a good Console.

Well, I dunno. They've done quite a lot to promote gaming as a whole for-forefronting online gaming to the living room. Unless you want to give credit to PSN. Xbox Live Arcade, Digital distribution to console gamers. The 360 lasted 7 years...someone must have been buying them.

Meanwhile yes it's had us stuck in the mud as PC Gamers, but I think people might be expecting these new APIs to work miracles, which they won't. The main benefits of next generation games will be felt regardless - with better LOD, textures overall and much larger environments. Witcher 3 will no doubt be a DirectX 11 game, just as a further down the line example.

Basically gave you the GUI and made a ton of cash from Windows and even more cash from Office licenses, yeah a crap company that does not do well.

Way to much negativity and pessimism here. All the competition heating up in the PC market is a great thing. Those moaning about Microsoft and Direct X did you not enjoy playing games on your PC for the past god knows how many years? Mantle supports 1 game and all of sudden Microsoft is lacking and not supporting the PC industry. It's laughable really. I mean they only been here for 20+ years.

AMD did a great thing with Mantle and sparked some competition. Direct X12 will likely be awesome. At the end of the day if you can only enjoy 1 PC game now because it supports Mantle, and no other games because DX11 etc are so poor, maybe you're in the wrong hobby? Take up knitting perhaps, join a sewing circle. I think a lot of old lady's like to moan a lot to each other as well, so a lot the guys who post here would be right at home :D
