2666 Ram... is it worth running it?

Hey all,

Im having a little trouble with my Avexir Core Blue 2666 ram, as it fails to reboot after running the computer for a short period of time. Is there much performance difference running at 2400 to 2666 as it doesn't seem to cause the problem at that frequency.

what board? tried a touch more imc voltage?

Yeah i have had a play with both the VTT and IMC which has enabled me to run at 2400 and I'm currently trying 2600 but it failed to boot once and succeeded the second try. i have had to increase more than expected to get to where i am though

also i have the voltage settings on extreme and at 1.70v for the ram to see if thats why it was failing

I think you might be at your limit on z77

2400mhz will be fine though its not much if any of a performance drop,if it was a haswell cpu you'd manage 2666mhz

so its the CPU limiting it? or the motherboard?

the cpu,ivybridge's integrated memory controller is weaker than haswell's

Cpu, the onboard memory controller of ivy bridge may just not be upto handling ram at 2600mhz. On haswell its a lot easier to run ram this high.

I dont think you will notice any difference running it at 2400 apart from in a benchmark.

aren't they the only reason we buy fast stuff?

but ok thats fine, just a bit peeved that i spent quite a bit more on the 2666 instead of the 2400

did a bit more playing about last night and I've managed to get 2600 working well, it still doesn't like to boot 100% properly as it gets stuck at the bios boot screen needing a power off and on but its far better than failing to boot at all causing the bios to want to reset or not booting again unless its been switched off for 15 mins.

Work on running @2400mhz with tighter timings and overall it could be faster than 2666mhz anyway.

timings are the only thing I've never really understood when it comes to RAM :-S

the lower the better

its like a clock that counts up,the shortest the number the faster it can pass on the command to the next timing (that's the way I understand it)

but what about the many different timings, surely they can't all do the same thing?

don't know about all the advanced timings but the main four 9-10-10-21 are the ones to concentrate on and command rate 1t is faster than 2t

the trfc in advanced can also be reduced depending on the ram speed but usually under 100,

Mine struggles with 2400 w/ 16GB (8GB is fine) (even when working around the problem on the board where the VTT/IMC voltages randomly drop to defaults). Doesn't really bother me though as 2133 with tight timings gives better and/or the same performance in most of what I do and I bought the RAM to run at tightened 2133 speeds anyhow.

i need to learn how these timings work and how best to adjust them by the sounds of it

Try 11-13-13-35 2T first at 2666 or 2400 go 10-12-12-31 1T then tune down focus on TWCL and TRFC.

The UP4TH Z77 was a demon with memory not sure about this one though.

A bios shot of mem timings would help. I know em for OC etc but not the order on this board
