Law passed in UK to allow women to do background checks on partners

You've a long and fruitful career in the New Brit Stasi.
Just be sure not to record anything on your superiors.

Which is why it only makes sense in the context of it being a more routine check, something women are able to do and encouraged to do before any relationship with any man. That's not how it's being framed now, but it certainly wouldn't be the first law to be put in place for one thing and then function creeped into something else.

Which would seem to me to be a bit of a problem. The first thing we should be looking at when making a new law is "Is this actually going to be effective?" Otherwise, why bother?

It's not a new law it's been around for ages and I think it's one of the rights of the people.

I bet there are thousands of people that when they go to live in a new town\city they would love to know
who they are going to live by and are they nice people ect.

The most important factor in law making is probably politics rather than practicality. It's certainly the biggest factor in some laws, including this one.

So there are a number of different "Is this actually going to be effective?" questions when lobbying for and making laws:

Is this going to be effective at getting me more votes than my opponents?

Is this going to be effective at promoting my socio-political agenda either directly or in connection with a politically powerful group? Sometimes it's politically useful to promote one you don't agree with because it has powerful lobbyists behind it and will therefore affect your image.

Is this going to be effective for what I want it to do, as opposed to what my PR spin campaign is saying it's for?

Do you really think that acknowledging the existence of politics and function creep is the same thing as having a successful career in an oppressive secret police force?

Seriously? You think that? You really think that?

What's all the fuss about? got something to hide?

It's been going on for years in the US and you don't need to ask the police as it's all on the net.

the fuss is deuse is that it's doesn't just include convictions but accusations as well.

so you can be perfectly innocent and still be caught up by this.

[..]

No, but presumably you have. Anyone who uses the "something to hide" argument does unless they're openly in favour of the authoritarianism that results from that line of argument.

Girl A meets Man B in a nightclub, they get on great and enter into a relationship. A few months down the line Girl A's friend, Girl C, has heard a few things about Man B from her friend Man D and warns Girl A.

Girl A uses Clare's Law to check out Man B and finds out he's not the loveable, down to Earth bloke she thinks he is. Girl A presents Man B with the evidence and dumps him. Man B sees red and gets all rapey and stabby.

Would not watch unless directed by James Cameron.

If you need to do a check on a potential partner it most likely means you don't trust them in the first place!

err yes, because no officer in thier right mind is going to risk ever not passing on a report is he?

think about it he doesn't pass it o nas it's a blatantly spurious report, the guy then goes on to kill or hit the woman, that officer is going to be dragged through the press till he finds himself on the dole, in a cell or hanging from his rafters.

Is this cop from Minority Report ?

If I discovered that my girlfriend had done these checks on me then the relationship would be over. They would come back negative but there is no trust now.
