Is the xbox one going hold back the PS4 game graphics ?

It may be controversial but let's face it, neither console is really what we were expecting from true "Next Gen" in terms of graphics. With a proposed seven year life, they are barely able to do high levels of graphical detail at 1080p/60fps reliably, even if they wring more performance out of the hardware with clever programming over the years it's hardly breath-taking graphical performance.

Meh, we're a few months in. Look how much extra performance developers found over the lifetime of the previous gen consoles.

I'd love to see how well a PC that is the same age as the PS3 hardware would handle a game like Uncharted 2/3 or The Last of US, they will wring far more than just a little bit of performance out of both next gen consoles.

Though to be fair Microsoft and Sony both lost billions last gen with their hardware, neither were prepared to do the same this time, hence the much more modest specs comparatively.

True enough but for PC gaming the point is you can upgrade the hardware over a 7 year life, you're not stuck with old hardware and as you upgrade the gaming tends to scale and improve, I have no doubt that in 5 years time 1440p will be the norm for PC gaming.

Other than to serve to illustrate the limitations of the console hardware even at release that's not really my point. I'm not really trying to compare PCs to Consoles, for the price a console is awesome. I'm just suggesting that whilst there's a fixation at the moment on graphical performance we should view it in context. For what was supposed to be the "Next Generation" of console hardware I don't think either console is particularly impressive from a graphics or CPU point of view struggling with even 1080p at a reasonable frame rate. Yes it will get better as devs wring more out of the hardware but it's not going to change the fundamental limits of the GPU/CPU they've shipped with.

From an objective point of view I don't think many people would view the current gen consoles as what they had in mind in terms of graphical horsepower when late in the life of 360 and PS3 people started talking about the next generation of console gaming. This gen seems a bit of a place holder to me, perhaps next will be more impressive? It wouldn't actually surprise me if this gen had wither a mid life upgrade or only lasted 5 or 6 years tops before new platforms are introduced.

It'll be interesting to see if both/either console manages to diversify away from just relying on startling graphics to prove long term appeal to gamers. Sony has ahead start with more horse power to play with, XO has a potential headstart as a central home hub. It'll be interesting to see how it pans out

Comparing PC to console is like comparing apples and oranges due to the low level access for have. You can rinse every piece of performance out of it. I think some people in the console section however exaggerate how often you need to upgrade of course. My almost 4 year old PC currently performs better than the PS4 and vastly outperforms the X1 I don’t plan on upgrading my PC for a long time at this rate as it runs everything better than the “next gen” consoles. Normally you would say this would change over time as the devs get to grips with the hardware but I’m not sure it will be the case this time. The consoles are more like PC’s architecture than ever before so we may not see the performance increase of previous generations. As you stated Macro, the current consoles are struggling to output at 1080p 60fps and PC is already moving onto 1440p but within 5 years I can see PC gaming moving to 4K and other new technologies. I love my PS4 to bits and I’m not even touching the PC just now. As you can all see I haven’t been commenting in the PC section as of late due to enjoying the console community here but I do wonder how long this generation will last. I think 5 years is a fair timescale and consumers are now even more prepared to send hundreds on upgrades than ever before.

Could it be the case a new console is released in 5 years’ time ( PS5 for the sake of argument) and be games will run on both platforms but with different settings (a little like a PC). This would save on dev costs and afford more time for them. It would also allow continuous improvement on a tech level while allowing consumers a choice without fragmenting the market. Just an idea 

It'll be interesting to see if for the next gen consoles they stay focussed on being pure gaming machines or become more multipurpose in nature driven by PC/Tablet & mobile gaming. In particular with DX12 coming to Snapdragon 800 it's not a massive leap to think hand held smartphones and tablets could equal or exceed the current gen consoles in terms of hardware raw power in the next few years AND be multipurpose devices as well. Let's face it there's already plenty of phones throwing graphics around at 1080p although obviously not to the level of a console. Still, most people will almost certainly update and replace their phone (or hand held device) 3 or 4 times in the expected life span of the current consoles. Are dedicated hardware consoles with a 7 year life actually a anachronism and throw back to the 90s unlikely to survive into the 2020's as a platform?

For gaming the competition is coming from phones and tablets, not from one console or the other, or even PCs. Japan is already heading this way.

Just to be really clear before someone comes along and shouts at me, I'm not comparing PCs to Consoles, they are clearly very different beasts. I've just used it to highlight the potential problems of having fixed spec hardware expected to last 7 years when I think it's fair to suggest it's not truly next gen hardware even now.

Thought I'd see if I could spin a thread with the potential for a flame fest into a somewhat more interesting wider discussion on consoles and how they may stack up in the future in general rather than a PS4 vs XO thang yet again. :D

What about the PC? I truly feel consoles are holding back the uber powaful PC platform.
Consoles are probably holding back PCs in terms of graphics but PC gamers are holding back games. While developers try to squeeze every ounce of graphical power from £700 graphics cards to appease the gaming master race most other aspects of gaming are being ignored :(

Like Michael Bay, George Bush and One Direction the world would a better place without PC gamers :p

Gaming back to its roots, substance over style

Yeah sure, I mean 8Gb GDDR5 is going to suck when devs start producing current gen specific games and have experience what it can do.

We're 6 months into the generation, it's never displayed the full potential of a console in this period.

Besides that, no matter how fast your PC is, you can't play console exclusives on them.

Missing the point (around fixed hardware spec over 7 years vs upgradable/whole unit replaced every two years) somewhat - did you read the whole post?

Taking your point however, 8Gb of fast RAM hardly makes up for pretty mediocre CPU/GPU (even by todays standards) if it has to remain the same for that long. Devs getting the best out of hardware is a given over time but as someone else mentioned, it appears to be pretty straight forward (particularly the PS4) PC type architecture I'd be surprised if there's massive overhead for improvement. XO may improve a little more as people get to grip with eSRAM and some of it's oddities, PS4 strength is it's pretty straight forward in terms of architecture so there's less likely to be "hidden" in optimisation.

I'm sure they'll both get tot he point where they can run 1080p at a reasonable refresh rate but surely that should be a very minimum starting point for "next gen" consoles, not an aspiration.

Have Sony and MS skimped on this gen of consoles, or, perhaps they're planning a shorter life for the platforms than last time? Is the idea of expensive fixed spec hardware something to consigned to the 90s and early 2000s to be replaced by something upgradable, or cheaper with a much shorter expected lifespan that we've come to see with smartphones and tablets?

Dunno - like I say, it just occurred to me that looking at the initial post in the thread are we actually just arguing about which is "least bad" for what is supposed to be a Next Generation gaming machine in terms of outright graphical power? Surely console gamers deserved better than this after 7 or 8 years?

It'll only hold back PS4 if developers are either lazy or receive a big cheque from Microsoft, at the very least they'll always be able to easily increase resolution without taking hardly any hit.

Worst question to ask in arguably the UKs largest XBOX ONE fanboy forum.

In all seriousness, yes it will. Its obvious, developers dont especially make PC games that much better, we all complain of ports etc They work to the lowest common denominator and then from there its just luck if things are prettier/smoother.

So, with the XBOX ONE being this generations 'WII', then we have to accept that the giant VHS machine will hold back the sleak, power performance of the PS4.

What?...ever seen stuff deved?

They work to the highest quality machine, seeing at the all have the same runtime now its going to be built and ran on a PC for deving requirements, then scaled down to what ever machines under that can manage.

Someone post an image comparison of a ps3/360 launch title and a recent title, you can then feel safe knowing there's a lot to one from each console =3
