Gillette Fusion ProGlide - any good?

Woo, another shaving argument!

But hopefully in amongst the "man the **** up" and "I am a bigger man than you because I used a Merkur" there will be some actual answers to the question: is the ProGlide better than the Mach 3, specifically the M3 Power?

I tried the normal Fusion a while ago and didn't get on with it. It irritated my skin and didn't cut as closely as my Mach 3, so I went back to my trusty servant: M3 Power blades. However I was wondering if the ProGlide is significantly better than the normal Fusion?

I should also mention that I dislike shaving and my only wish is for it to be as quick, easy and smooth as possible. I typically shave in a hot steamy shower in front of a small mirror attached to the tiles at face height, every morning apart from Sunday, when I give my face a rest. I don't care much about blade cost either.

Cheers.

Yeah it's good for me. Mind you I've dry shaved with throwaway bics before, so I'm fairly easy :D

I, also, can't really abide these folk who think they're the bees knees because they buy this shaver, then buy these blades, then spend xxx quid on various products...then worst of all think the whole world needs to know about it. Terrible bores.

I use Gillette pretty much exclusively, mainly because i have handles for the various models. Its very slightly better than the mac3 turbo.. But not massively, at all.

I think they are all much of a muchness. I think quality gel/lube plays a big part though, as is keeping the blades clean and dry after use to prolong thier life. I quit like original source tea tree and mint gel.

They're a bit more than that and will give most people a better shave most of the time but I don't think that's useful advice as it's clear you like the Gillette stuff. I'd just buy one and throw it away if it's rubbish.

It's ok I guess if you can't shave like a real man ;)

Double edge or gtfo

Real men want to spend less time shaving so they can spend more time with their family or making money at work.

Absolutely. Personally I keep coming back to King of Shaves gels (sensitive skin version in my case). It's fantastic stuff and the glide is brilliant, with a slight lather too. I tried oils and low-lather l'Oreal gel...completely useless.

Better maybe, but at what time cost? And yes, I could always just buy one. Always fun hearing people's opinions though (well, most of the time).

I do like the ProGlide, as you can use with or without the power, and both seem to work equally well, but with a very different feel.

As I always say, the key is the lube, and really the gels (including Gillette's own) are all absolutely rubbish* in my experience. Get a good, proper cream (Vulfix Old Original or Truefitt & Hill) and a brush. They last for ages and ages. And make sure you rinse the blade between strokes - proper and comfortable shave which stops the blade from clogging up and ripping the hair.

* To be fair, Gillette's gel is very good at preventing bathroom mirrors (and biker's helmet visors) from misting up.

Lol it takes like 8 mins for me to shave properly, using something 100x better and cheaper than Gillette rubbish

Yeh rinsing the blades is very important between strokes, multi blade razors like Gillette get clogged up very quickly and lose thier effectiveness unless rinsed often.

Serious question, but do you actually have a proper beard? 8 mins is pretty quick. Probably takes me 5 to do two passes (with and against) using my Mach 3. I assumed the DE razors took much than that to get a smooth face.

I guessit depennds if you shave every day, i have a beard , and to tidy it properly i have to use my clippers before I shave, to tidy up the edges as it chokes the razor.

OK, so exciting update...

I changed my mind and bought a Merkur 34C and 100 Feather blades off Amazon for ~£50.

I had a shave with the Merkur blade that came with it this morning. Initial impressions are:

- Took roughly twice as long as it did with my Gillette.
- Not a single nick with two passes with and against! I was convinced I'd slice myself good.
- VERY smooth and close shave. 5 o'clock shadow greatly reduced compared to with the Mach 3.
- Minor razor burn, nothing dramatic and should improve.
- Lower neck looks better already. Had slight issues with red pimples on the lower neck with the Gillette.
- Not to mention the obvious cost benefit over the very expense cartridges.

That's how you do it. Good man!

Your speed will improve and your technique will develop but it will never be as quick as using a cartridge razor so you'll have to get used to that. If I'm reading your post correctly, you've used a Merkur blade but also bought Feathers. Feathers have a bit of a fearsome reputation in that they're probably the sharpest consumer blade available. They're pretty unforgiving, especially if you're new to the whole thing, but will give you an amazingly close shave. A good soap or cream and a careful hand should be enough to keep the nicks to a minimum. What are you using here?

Anyway, good choice :)

Tee hee!

Seriously though, welcome to the DE fold brother. You won't regret it. If you need any advice about the ancillary products then don't hesitate to ask. :)
