Gillette Fusion ProGlide - any good?

That's how you do it. Good man!

Your speed will improve and your technique will develop but it will never be as quick as using a cartridge razor so you'll have to get used to that. If I'm reading your post correctly, you've used a Merkur blade but also bought Feathers. Feathers have a bit of a fearsome reputation in that they're probably the sharpest consumer blade available. They're pretty unforgiving, especially if you're new to the whole thing, but will give you an amazingly close shave. A good soap or cream and a careful hand should be enough to keep the nicks to a minimum. What are you using here?

Anyway, good choice :)

That's right. The razor came with one Merkur blade, so I used that this morning. I read that about the Feathers, and the sharpness was the main reason I bought them. My beard is quite tough and I want to get the closest shave possible, so I plumped for (quite a few) Feathers on the understanding that I might cause myself some damage until I get used to them. 25p per blade so not bad.

First shave with those is tomorrow morning, so let's see how I get on. I shave in / during my shower with a small mirror attached to the wall tiles, and I reckon all that steam and hot water helps a lot.

I'm currently using up a tube of King of Shaves Alpha Gel Sensitive, which I found pretty good with my first DE shave this morning, though the lather is nothing like I've seen in the YouTube videos of people using cream or soap. Any lather disappeared a bit too quickly.

Tee hee!

Seriously though, welcome to the DE fold brother. You won't regret it. If you need any advice about the ancillary products then don't hesitate to ask. :)

I know, slight back tracking eh :o.

Thanks for the offer of advice. I can already feel the draw of a better shaving brush and some proper cream / soap :).

Congrats on no longer being a little pussy. Get yourself the blade selection pack and work your way through them and find what's best.

Real men want to spend less time shaving so they can spend more time with their family or making money at work.

pfft, real men dont shave :p

But if your gonna its gotta be a DE and glad to see you saw the light

Cartridges really take the biscuit with there price and for that alone i invested in a proper razor
The Mach3 is 16 years old now and its just as expensive now (if not more), as it was back then to buy them

Using the shower for your first use of Feathers is a good idea. I find that environment the absolute best to shave in.

As mentioned, do work your way through the various brands of blade and shaving creams - pretty soon you will find your favourites and have a fantastic (and surprisingly fast) routine going.

My products of choice are Feathers and Proraso cream, followed by Truefitt and Hill cologne balm. Anyway, all of this is covered in the Manly Shaving thread, so I won't continue here.

Disposal razors are a complete waste of time and money. Merkur blades are 1p for 5 million.

OK, so exciting update...

I changed my mind and bought a Merkur 34C and 100 Feather blades off Amazon for ~£50.

Son, I am not disappoint.

I had a shave with the Merkur blade that came with it this morning. Initial impressions are:

- Took roughly twice as long as it did with my Gillette.
- Not a single nick with two passes with and against! I was convinced I'd slice myself good.
- VERY smooth and close shave. 5 o'clock shadow greatly reduced compared to with the Mach 3.
- Minor razor burn, nothing dramatic and should improve.
- Lower neck looks better already. Had slight issues with red pimples on the lower neck with the Gillette.
- Not to mention the obvious cost benefit over the very expense cartridges.

Welcome to manhood.

I can't use any other blade than feathers, they are epic, even though they only do two shaves for me, my beard growth is steel, I'm convinced of it

Personally I think the Proglides are awesome, and give a close shave in very little time.

Costs sucks though, so I am a Derby + Edwin Jagger man now.,

I'm rarely clean shaven but when I am I use the ProGlide. They give a close shave and it's relatively effortless, better than the Mach3 and Fusion I've used in the past.

Only thing I've found that helps with the costs of Gillette razors is the use of a razor-pit. Still probably not as cost-effective as the Merkur et al., but it does make the ProGlide last a little longer.

Nah, all these 3 blades are the same.

Get a Merkur though, it's quicker and closer.

If I'm using a straight or shavette I take time, but it's bloody impossible to cut yourself with a merkur unless you're a total div. I don't always use a mirror.

Interested here to improve my shaving game.

I have tried lots of the disposable types, Gillette Mach's, Pro Glides etc etc. I have also tried the "leading supermarket brand" type gels and foams from Gillete, Dove etc etc. And after all this testing, pain, thinking I have found the best, getting annoyed and sometimes angry.... The best combo I have found and been using for months now is:
- Wilkinson Sword 3 blade disposable, the green sensitive one's.
- L'oreal mens expert sensitive gel.

Seriously the razors above are fine, but when I started using that L'oreal men expert gel stuff it was complete bliss in comparison, it made such a difference. for me it is a million times better than all the other supermarket stuff I have tried, most notable being the Dove sensitive stuff I used for a while and thought it was alright. The Gillette stuff is all shockingly bad for me.

But reading what you guys are saying make me think if I cross over from supermarket bought junk to slightly more specialised gear, I could be entering a world of shaving heaven compared to what I consider "good" as per the above.

p.s. I shave my legs and chest as well. Go ahead and rage about that!
