Our Bullmastiff caught a burglar last night

Mmm... treats.....

He has a pig's head defrosting and a bowl of green tripe on standby (his favourite). :) Sorry for the rubbish quality I've had to receive the pic through Facebook and then upload it to a mobile friendly host.

This thread has made my day! What an awesome dog, you both must be so proud of him. IMO he acted in the correct way, protecting the pack when his master is out. You couldn't have asked for more. :D

I have a question.. If your gf, or you (if you had been there) had called him back would he have let the scumbag go?

Nick, give it a rest, it's becoming embarrassing now. Stick to things you know about, like ASDA checkout girls not wanting to date you.

Good job Hatton :)

haha Thanks. :)

Honest answer? I don't know, because he's not protection trained and we'd be relying on a balance between (1) him being very obedient normally and (2) him being in a very high state of defense drive and potentially not listening. Obviously in a trained dog things are different. My oldest dog (who lives with my brother now due to being retired and age 15) will release ('out') on the first command, and recall to await further instructions. Hatton acted on instinct so who knows? Being honest he did his job - he got between the threat and my mrs so she had time to escape, lock the door and call for help. So anything after that is academic... ;)

Epic dog, epic story!

Reading that it's little wonder the fella has taken to eating burglars. :p

haha People feed corpses to pigs, and my dog can eat a whole pig. So, yano... Just saying. #nomoreburglars

We had an 11 stone Bullmastiff called Oscar, and he once caught someone in the garden, was quite a sight seeing a young little skinny scrote pinned to the ground by a much bigger dog, the look on the guys face was priceless, sadly Oscar passed a couple of years ago, was devastated tbh, we have another Bullmastiff now called Bailey he isn't has big we think he's going to peak around 8 1/2 stone and is much less keen and much more laid back than Oscar was but he's got an awesome guarding instinct and is the most loveable character,

Have to say though, your Bullmastiff is magnificent.

Top job by the big fella..If he was mine and had done that I'd have been proud of him.

Can't believe some of the replies on what should have been a good positive story. Some people are never happy unless they are going against the grain..

Oh he definitely did his job. I believe these dogs were bred for guarding, so Hatton acted naturally. I was just interested in knowing because presumably this was the first time he had shown aggression, and so I wondered how quickly he went back to his normal state.

I have a bull terrier that will stay quietly by the door when the postman or visitors are outside. But one night at around 3am he started barking and growling, it was really out of character. When I went down there 2 guys were running away, they had tried to force the door open.

He got a "well done" from the policeman, and from me a massive nylabone the next day!

cant believe that attitude of some posters on here,

The dog did what dogs do, he protected his pack and his territory, dogs are fantastically protective and loyal when they are raised correctly. always found the akitas we had were great pets despite the reputation they have due to poor owners, same with rotties, one of my regular customers is a lovely german lady who trains PPDs and security dogs for a living she swears by rotties over anything else including GSDs. that said despite my own leanings toward akitas we ended up with a staff due to the wifes love of them, although I very much doubt she would even bother challenging anyone on the property let alone in the house

when I was in the prison service we had a patrol dog that was a roti/GSD cross it looked absolutely terrifying, it would tear anything that wasnt wearing black and white apart ;) if let off the lead

good job, but theres no way I'd have an 11 stone dog, I couldnt manage the **** lol my cocker spaniel is a crappy guard dog she loves people too much, just hates cats and birds, good gun dog though

I'd love a Rotty, I used to look after one for weeks on end which was a friends dog and the thing was huge! Softest dog I've ever met though, so docile and daft. Just has a bed rep.

Turned my back on her once and went into the kitchen to start off my ea, came back in and it had eaten half the table leg... bloody dog! Sat there with a grin and the table leg in it's mouth...... Loved her! :D

If anything, for your own sake you should let it slide. As with your previous comments aimed towards you knowing more than a man with 20 years in the profession, despite never having your own dog, makes you look more than slightly foolish.

We need more pics! :D

Classic Don wading in without actually reading first ;)

I've walked (trained and owned) 3 dogs. Sure, not anywhere near professional as Rainmaker, and kudos to him for such a job, must be very rewarding. Sadly, calling me foolish whilst not even reading what I've written becomes slightly ironic...........:)
