Do Americans not lock their car doors when they drive? It's normally the first thing I do (possibly due to habit/OCD)

My car locks it's doors automatically when i'm driving.

...it's a bloody pain and i wish i could turn it off :(

GTA ************!

First thing I thought too, was waiting for him to rob the coppers car when he crashed :D

Mine does too but I turned it off when I got fed up unlocking it when the kids needed to get in.

He'd be pretty screwed against most new brands - proximity key sensor (in pocket as you leave the vehicle) and auto-door locking. Plus i've been in some cars that seem to have a start-up procedure reminiscent of a Falcon Jet... sooo... *engine off* and exit the vehicle.

My wife like the auto locks on our car I hate them, I have turned them off and won't tell her how to turn them back on

Our car's doors automatically lock when you pull off but in this country that's more to stop bags getting stolen from passenger seat/back seats/boot than jackings.

In England?! Have you ever known anyone to be car jacked?! If you're moving, it won't matter anyway. I've never locked my doors while driving, and have yet to be car jacked.

Sadly yes, lol. I was driving a car that 3 thugs tried to carjack (along with a good friend/fellow forum member), a day after being mugged in Amsterdam no less :D. Wasn't the nicest area, etc. But yes, it definitely happens. And t'aint nice.

Haven't seen anyone be carjacked, although I have seen a case of road rage where someone got out of their car at some traffic lights and went up to the car behind and tried to open the door (presumably to pull the driver out and put his fist under chin), but it was locked so he just banged on the window shouting and kicked the door a bit.

I've always locked my door as a precaution. It only takes a second to press the lock/unlock button so it isn't really a chore.

I disabled the "autolock" feature on all the cars I had, firstly if someones waving a gun in my face they can have it - that's why I'm insured.

Secondly if I'm in an accident, I want to be able to get out - I don't trust the failsafes they put into cars.

Luckily my current car doesn't even have central locking! Hell, my housekey is a more modern design.

This, can't say I have ever met anyone who locks their car doors when driving. Surely that would be a very dumb move in the event of an accident? I have a friend who had to be pulled from a burning car after hitting a tree and if he had locked his doors he would have been toast.

I did have auto lock on a JDM Supra TT as it was standard but I disabled it as it was annoying and pointless in the UK.

Not sure about most other cars, but all the ones I've owned will unlock the door when you pull the door handle, so it makes no difference there.

Newer cars will unlock the doors upon 'detecting' an accident, but otherwise they would have to smash window and unlock door. So yes in that case it could cause a problem.
