No, they had about a 2 year gap between the 7000 series and these new cards (all 2 of them!). So it was just playing catch up. They started off saying these cards are Titan Killers which was proved right in some games, not all. But since then Nvidia has released the 780Ti and Titan Black which demolish the Hawaii cards left, right and centre in most games and benchmarks :(

I really want AMD to come out big with 20nm first as they usually have been but it looks very likely that Nvidia has a big lead in technology at the moment- even with Maxwell at 28nm if they decide to do so.

That is one of the main reasons I don't trust any reviewer's numbers. They demolish a card for a poor stock cooler, noise, overclock like my grandma would and publish numbers that anyone here can beat easily.

This, coupled with the fact that we bench regularly with updated drivers while their numbers remain stagnant, means I don't care for them other than for stock benchmarks.
 
Kaap I think they will be cherry X chips with better electrical properties tbh, with some SPs strategically removed and perhaps a smaller bus.

I own two triple slot Asus Matrix Platinum 7970s and having seen the amount of heat these cards produce I don't think a triple slot cooler would work.

Two overclocked Hawaii chips use a lot more watts than two overclocked Tahiti chips.

Also when I did run my platinums with the side of the case on I had a little problem, all the heat going into the case made the tubing on the waterloop to the CPU sag and the level in the res dropped by 10mm.:eek:

Definitely, this is what NVidia also do with the GTX 690 - use cherry picked GK104 chips.

I think the bus will stay at 512 bit though.

Xtreme seems to favour nvidia where as performance favours amd in 3dmark 11.

I am not talking clock-for-clock here, but rather absolute performance difference between a voltage unlocked 780 Ti and a voltage unlocked 290x.

I don't have anything against AMD, heck I had two 290x cards myself. But then they released the 290 at $150 less in the US, then gave free games to everyone but us owners of the 290/290x. If the mining craze had not happened, the early adopters would have been massively screwed and for the first month or so I was not impressed by the way they ran the release one bit.

Back to topic: I am fairly certain AMD has realized what a bad stock cooler can do and will likely have a much better one on this dual card. I personally would rather they spend less on a stock cooler and transfer the savings on to us so we can then slap on a water block instead :D

Also, if you buy a card at a price and then find it goes cheaper, dont see what has changed. You thought it was worth buying at the original price. The amount you paid is the same, the card is the same, dont see why you would care if nothing has changed for you a month or two down the line. I bought a 290x on release and have had no regrets!

Max stable FPS/numbers for each card at the same benchmark/game irrespective of clocks. If you have a card that does 1500 MHz and another that does 1000 MHz, would you run both at 1000 MHz for gaming to compare?

I am not saying I would be upset if the price reduced, the way the entire release went was pretty poor. That's why I was kinda bummed.

Like I said it depends on the cooler design, the Matrix Plat 7970 heatsink is much less substantial than the 7990 heatsink despite taking up an extra slot, if they used a beefier version of the 7990 heatsink and better fans they could to it I think. But it would benefit from a better layout.

Why cant 290x's be overclocked?

Also, aren't 780 Ti's voltage locked on non custom bios'?

My reference 290x seems to be a decent clocker, unless my monitor has been lying to me the whole time.

Of course the 290x cards can be overclocked, in fact the unlocked voltage helps their case a lot. I have still found an unlocked 780Ti can beat an unlocked 290x in most cases- at lower heat and power consumption as well.

The point I was making is that Nvidia's technology is already ahead on average and they are looking likely to come out with new technology sooner than AMD. Now how they choose to let consumers access this technology is a different matter- Nvidia and its green light program can go kiss my backside for all I am concerned.

I'll admit I'm baiting a little with that, was just pointing out why go to reviewers when we have a perfectly good bench section for multiple things right here.
