Our Bullmastiff caught a burglar last night

A late appreciation of the op but awesome op and epic hero dog, I hope the intruder gets ill from the bites maybe even some crushed hand or forearm bones, I can but hope.

Good dog

A lot of people really under estimate the power of even some small dogs, to break into the property containing any dog is beyond retarded.

Rainmaker, you've needlessly defended Hattons actions... I'd be chuffed to bits knowing that I had a dog like yours, defending the other half and his territory when you're not there :)

I get the point of attacking based on his own judgement but I have two friends both with big dogs, (one's a Japanese Akita and I cant remember the other) but both of them get seriously defensive if you walk in the house with saying hello personally to them! Sounds odd but they just won't be ignored!

As said a million times above, GOOD HATTON!!!

I doubt if the dog bit him. Maybe minor cuts, unintended.

If a dog that powerful bit someone properly, there'd be some sign of it. The dog had them down right away - nobody is going to be standing after an 11st dog hits them at full pelt and the state of the garden makes it clear that the dog was in control. The dog could have chewed them to bits, but there's no sign of any injury. Not even a bit of blood.

It looks to me like the dog was just very clearly making his point - go away and don't come back. Threat and assertion of dominance rather than attack.

That was my thought. In an enclosed garden with 6 feet fences, if the dog had wanted to rip him to shreds I doubt it would have any difficulties doing so.

As it is it sounds like the dog just knocked the bloke down and chased him/ harrassed/growled etc while he tried to escape.

Either way, great dog and the burglar deserved everything he got.

Awesome dog :)

My Newfoundland is almost 2 now and at the end of his growth and is around that weight... ive always wonderd what he would do if a burglar arrived as he is a soft blanket (the breed are docile / friendly by nature).

However they originate from Portuguese Mastiffs apparently (Cross bred with something) and share the same build, I mean I can see a Newfoundland in your dog, bar it not being a big fur ball :D - Their heads are very similar. I can imagine the burglar just dropping a load.. I mean playing around with my dog and he can knock me back and Im over 6ft and weight like 16+ stone.

I think the concern is that if little Abdullah from over the way accidently kicks a ball into your back garden and happens to jump the fence to retrieve it (happens, impetuous nature of youth). You're dog goes wild, boyed by the previous showering of affection and with a lack of discipline can't be called off. Kid gets mauled. Police find out dog has attacked before with no corrective behaviour .. could be unfortunate all round tbh.

When I was a kid playing ball in the street, if I kicked the ball over a garden fence and I knew the owner had a dog. I wouldn't just jump the fence and go and get it. Also if I didn't know the house I would have had a peak over the fence to check if they had a dog or anything that made it look like they owned a dog. Some over thinking going on in this thread.

Give ya head a wobble!

I accept that, but when I say 'let them' (steal), I really meant 'do everything within the law and without having to resort to violence as a means of dissuading a potential burglar'. Better locks/lights etc is fine. My overall point is: most people on here seemingly can't wait for the day they get to kick a burglars head in or get their dogs to cause harm of their behalf. I find that a bit weird :p

I find you a bit soft. Try to break into my house, all bets off.

Good lad.

Presumably the dog would be inside and snarling at the door. The home owner opens the door and shouts go get em boy after the first incident.

I guess im just pointing out how these things can go wrong without taking care of the dog...

If I were a burglar, and wanted to burglarize something in someone's garden/house and I knew the owner had a dog.I wouldn't just jump the fence and go and get it. Some people, and children, quite demostrably aren't as clever as you

^Same with mine, but I like her that way :D Most she'll do is alert you to someone's presence which is good enough for me.

Still, good on Hatton for defending the missus :)

Could be the same for me. I've never caught a burglar so I honestly have no idead how I'd react. The difference is (maybe under pretence) that I will try to react proportionately.
