Write-Off Insurance Advice - Road Condition

You were doing 20mph and wrote the car off? Well colour me sceptical.

I doubt it would have written it off if I hit a car or something flatter or moveable, but a tree is pretty solid and thin. It went in the middle of the front of the car so broke the radiator damaged the engine and gearbox (the front wings were practically unmarked). The insurance company would not fix that.

I have been round that corner more times than i can count and never had the slightest hint of understeed/oversteer, this in cars from RS Turbos to RX8s.
The reason for all the crashes is its a well know road for driving fun even the bikers love it.

Pretty similar corner yes.

I will see what the insurance company says about legal cover.

On the upside may as well start a new thread looking for another car :)

Thanks for the sarcasm mate

I clearly didn't see the gravel and if I had I wouldn't have hit a tree :o

Anyhow thanks all - likely see you in another thread choosing a new car whenever the insurance get back to me.

If you liked the Fiesta, why not get another one?

... Maybe make sure this one has ESP, and some decent tyres. ;) :D

The front tyres were pretty shocking budget tyres that I bought the car with (had 6mm tread so i couldn't bring myself to change them).

The fiesta was nice, I have been looking at the Vauxhall Astra but not sure how they compare.

I don't really wish to sound like a typical ocuk armchair investigator, but when you began to understeer, you'll have started to lose speed through friction. I assume you braked when you realised, and you've also bumped up the grass a bit before you hit. If you were doing 20mph, your impact speed will have been signicantly lower.

From the photo of the car, it does indeed look like you're weren't going ridiculously fast (from what you can see at least) but you may have convinced yourself you were going slower than you really were, which is natural and understandable.

While the road is in a poor state, if it was bad enough to cause a car at 20mph to leave the road without any other factors, pretty much every car going round it would end up in the same spot.

yes that's someone's bumper by the tree.

Whilst standing by the road for about 4 hours (recovery took ages the AA got it wrong and sent a little van) another car slid on the same gravel.

You're welcome.

Maybe they do a group discount for 2 or more drivers :D

You'll have almost no chance with your insurer, it will go down as a fault claim I'm afraid in the same way it would if you had slid on an area of spilt diesel.

If, as you say the road was "under investigation" by the local authority - then you may have some sort of claim (albeit unlikely) assuming there were no signs warning of slippery or variable road conditions:
