If they could have done it, they would have done it by now. Interesting article by Peston this morning saying how former US Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson claimed that in the midst of the 2008 financial crisis, Russia was trying to engage China in a conspiracy to undermine Fannie-Mae and Freddie-Mac debt. The Chinese told them to do one. It's worth noting that Paulson told Peston this before the current crisis in the Ukraine started. Provides further evidence that Russia still believes it is in a Cold War whereas the West is still trying to play nicely.

Yup, notable examples include Iraq (Euros) and Libya (Gold) who instantly experienced regime change.

But I think Russia is a tad too big for that. The only thing stopping them really is that the people in Russia with a lot of power also have a lot of dollar interest. But if Obama goes full retard and sanction crazy on those people it may swing the pendulum.

So far the Ukrainian troops have shown no sign of switching sides and behaved with the utmost dignity in stark contrast to Russia's behaviour. What if they neither switch sides or leave Crimea? That is a genuine worry though.... With Putin himself controlling transport and infrastructure, he could just turn the red lights at all signals in Crimea and the Ukranian forces will be forever stuck, with no chance for escape....

This is what I really hope doesn't happen but fear it might; Russian troops storm the Ukrainian bases on 21st March, shoot any troops who resist and take the remaining Ukrainian soldiers prisoner and transport them back to Russia, where after a few weeks they get released back to Ukraine in a humiliating parade in front of Russia Today cameras. To predict Putin, all you have to do is be a pessimist.
