GoogleAccount Hacked - £350.00 Stolen

Was it a Visa Debit card? If so the rules are actually pretty similar to those of a a CC.

It is a NatWest master card. Seems google are washing their hands of it: they recommend "reaching out to the bank". Will call them in the morning and see what happens.

Here we go.......

Spoke to the bank and they are saying google are responsible. Gonna be painful this I can see it.

Allegedly I need to call retailer dispute in the morning.

Section 6 Part 138-139

138. If a credit card transaction has not been authorised by the customer then any interest that may have been charged on
this transaction will be refunded unless the customer has acted fraudulently or with gross negligence.
139. Unless the subscriber can show that the customer acted fraudulently or with gross negligence, their liability for their
credit card being misused will be limited as follows:
 If someone else uses the card, before the customer informs the subscriber that it has been lost or stolen or that
someone else knows the PIN, the most the customer will have to pay is £50;
 If someone else uses the card details without the customer’s permission, and the card has not been lost or
stolen, the customer will not have to pay anything;
 If someone else uses the card details without the customer’s permission for a transaction where the cardholder
does not need to be present (e.g buying something over the internet), the customer will not have to pay
anything; and
 If the card is used before the customer has received it, the customer will not have to pay anything.

Seems to be all sorted now. I contacted google again and pointed out that that I was actually covered under their own fraud policy and suggested to them that if they don't think I am covered then it suggests that they beleive the payments were not fraudelant; in other words I was lying.

I also pointed out that I had never downloaded the core game and wanted to know why they would beleive I would download currency for a game I don't own. I then asked for the IP address of the device the payment was made through before finally notifying them that my bank have moved the case to their fraud department.

I never received a reply to my questions but they refunded all of the payments over night - so success!

Just to say this thread actually got me to enable 2-step verification on Google and PP accounts. I normally conscious about security but this thread gave me the nudge to get this done.

Also glad to see it had a happy ending.
