New car £5k

Buy the car you want, and get her a pair of pink fluffy dice. Everyone's a winner.

this! or some other trinket to work as a distraction from the bigger picture :p like magpies isn't it? captivated by something shiny :D (ok not intending to sound overly sexist by that statement :p )

It's very hard to say no to the woman who, every now and again let's you have sex with her. Trust me, we've all been there.

But, my god, grow a pair. If you start off like this, by the time you're married, you'll be driving a 3008 and doing all the housework. :p

You are completely right, its just usually we agree on stuff like this so I was surprised she took a different view (for a silly reason).

As I was going to bed last night American Pie 2 came on TV (again), I remember seeing this in the cinema when I was at school. I googled it and saw it was 13 years old, which made me feel old and made me determined not to buy some middle aged boredom machine. I plan to recapture my youth by driving round in an orange sports car.

My other half wasn't sure about the 350Z, but she actually doesn't mind it - it's comfortable, cruises nicely, I can fit her crap in the boot for a long weekend, and I get to enjoy myself when driving. IT's also a beautiful machine.

Have a read about the 350Z's, the tax shoots up from 2005 on wards to £400 per year.

Its mid 2006 that the changeover happens.

A road tax increase that is equal cost to two tanks of fuel should be the absolute least of your worries on a car like that.

Just us!

She has asked the following questions that I don't know the answer to:
• How reliable is it? very if you maintain it properly.
• How easily available are new parts and how expensive are they? it is a mass produced UKDM car by a well recognised brand. parts will be more expensive than a cheap hatch though. Tyres and other consumables are the big cost, as is the clutch/flywheel as i have already mentioned
• How safe is it? its a rear wheel drive sports car with 300bhp, its as safe as you want it to be. they are supposed to be very good in a crash situation though.

in all honesty, it doesn't sound like the kind of car for you. if you are in two minds about a car like this and have not 100% committed to owning one then you will just see it as an unnecessary expense. if the clutch goes and you need to spend a grand replacing it, that is 1/5th of your budget.

It sounds like your Mrs has a fairly large say in your decision making process. In which case, try and reach a compromise. realistically though, if you want a sports car, and she doesnt, then you have to lay out who the financial implications of this vehicle apply to.

if the running and servicing costs are 50/50 then she should have a say. if you are buying something with your own money and running it out of your own pocket. get what you want.

Permission has been granted, I was gearing up for a battle and instead got a whatsapp saying she was happy with it on the condition that we buy a cheap runaround next year for her to use.

I now get the car I want without any bloodshed :)

Running costs are very similar to my Alfa (clutch is £1k on that and a similar dmf set up).

I was more interested in how hard it was to diy, on the alfa its a 2 day job that requires custom bent spanners and a contortionist. I have no issue with doing it myself if it is a days task that just involves a lot of unbolting/rebolting.

From my perspective its not a massive issue if,it goes wrong, just not it the first 6months. Also my budget is self imposed, more than capable of covering a more expensive car but current priority is the new house.

understandable, I was in the same position 6 months ago and put the car on hold.

I reckon a clutch and fly replacement is doable at home if you're handy with a spanner but asking the question on the 350z forum would get you the proper answers you need.

its a jap car, so getting something with a decent maintenance record will safeguard you against problems a little.

good luck with the hunt and post pics :)

Maybe a hot hatch is your kinda car?

Practicality and driavbility for the missus with hoon for you too?

I am not willing to choose a car on the off chance that my gf, who hasn't driven in 8 years, might want to go for a drive once a year.

We have agreed on the 350z, now I just need to find a decent one in budget.

I didn't realise how little she had drove!

Good choice.

Go onto the "who owns a 350/370z thread and find my posts, lots of good info there if you haven't already :)

Op has bought his car now anyway, but only a lunatic would spend £5k on a rev 3 turbo now...and that's from someone who had one and loved it
