'Contact lost' with Malaysia Airlines plane

Apparently a Taiwan university student thinks he has found the plane.Daily mail link

Looks fake to me though, unless it dropped out of the sky with no fire or anything.

Shocker as daily fail doesn't even do basic research before publishing a story. Tomnod have already shown in multiple places that the first images are of a boat by using other data that hasnt been published to their website, and that the other one is a plane in flight due to the lack of land scar.

I wish people would stop on about fire, when they have zero idea on system layout. How does a small fire knock out comms? It cannot happen.

It wouldn't matter if the fire caused a hole to cause the aircraft to depressurise, the crew would get a cabin altitude warning and decend while on oxygen. Unless they were as incompetent as the Helios pilots.

How does smoke get from the gear bay into the flight deck. Are you thinking that scene in Commando when he tears a sheet of canvas and climbs onto the gear?

Fire does not spread easily from outside to inside on an aircraft at 37,000ft.

There was no fire that caused the transponder and all comms to go. The systems are too spread out and have redundancy. It would have to be something that took the lot out at once but I don't think that's what happened.

Amen to that.

People with no working knowledge of fundamental aircraft design for safety critical systems (duplex, triplex, quadruplex buses, physical separation of items, dissimailar hardware etc) thinking that modern civil aircraft have a possibility for single point failure for comms (and other systems). If it was a fire, it wouldn't knock out all comms in one go before the crew could radio out a mayday. These things are design to have catastropic (i.e. fataility causing) failure rates in the 1x10^-9 or better.

When the A380's Trent 900 turbine disc blew up, did the turbine blades cut all the hydraulics, no. Yes they cut some but due to the design of the system (e.g routing hydraulic cables down the leading and trailing edges, multiple surfaces etc) it entered a reversionary mode, isolating the fault allowing the crew to limp home.

Fire, no. I don't buy it.
Fire + Extreme crew incompetance, maybe but very unlikely.
Like dannyjo said, it would have to have been an immediate catastropic failure, which given the pings doesn't seem likley either.

Female relatives dragged from press conference for taliking to journalists today.

Well done Malaysia, authoritarian Muslim country showing the world how backwards they are....

The way I saw it, screaming, crying and shouting at the authorities in front of the world's press is only going to get you removed, in Malaysia or anywhere else. Don't think it's got anything to do with them being Muslim or backwards, as you put it.

I hope the Chinese government have a word or two to with the Malaysian authorities.
