Suggestion for a 3TB drive

Hi All!

I'm looking for some advice about which HDD to buy as I'm running out of disk space and I'm thinking of buying a 3TB drive to store mostly games that I don't play very often (damn you steam! :)). I would like the disk to be on the fast end (greens are not an option), so I don't need to wait for long loading screens.

I was looking at the WB black, but they are quite expensive (50% more than a Seagate) and I don't need a 5 year warranty. I was considering the WD Red, but I haven't been able to find a benchmark between WD red and black on 3TB disks.

I've also seen some reviews about the Hitachi (ex-)deathstar and they come well positioned against other drives.

I just realized that another option is to make buy 2x2tb drives and put then in raid 0 (more power hungry, but definitely faster).

Thanks!
Augusto

Why is so difficult to buy reliable storage? :(.

I just checked some reviews about that model in newegg, and people who bought them a are reporting quite a high failure rate (40% of the reviewers gave 1 star) and they are reporting that both new and old units did break.

Those might be from a previous batch (as those units were bought a while ago and were sold in the US)... This also sinks my previous comment about Hitachi :S.

Is there any other model that you konw it has a lower failure rate?

99% of buyers likely don't bother giving any stars? :)

If it was anywhere near 40% failure they'd probably recall them.

Thanks a lot for you suggestions chaps! After a bit more investigation I decided to go for 2x2TB Toshiba drives that I'll use in RAID 1, as it's not the end of the world if I loose the data.

I'll only put things that can be downloaded from the internet, and the RAID 1 should give me a nice 300MB/s of read throughput, which is a nice speed load games.

I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope that these drives won't fail - I'm quite lucky in storage... from the 10-15 drives I bought in the last 20 years, none failed on me... I still have an enclosure with a 10-year old 120GB drive.

Again, thanks a lot for your suggestions!!

I woudl suggest staying clear of Toshiba and go with a manufacturer who are known for Storage (like WD or Seagate)

Have a dozen or so 1/2/3TB drives from Seagate / WD

Toshiba started making HDDs by roughly a decade before WD/Seagate. :)

They also have Fujitsu tech + IBM/Hitachi 3.5" tech which is what we are getting in the 3.5" drives.

So they have plenty of pedigree.
