Early Life Crisis Car?...

Cars do impress when you are young.

I cleaned my brand new MK1 vRS on the street many times and was never approached by a young lady.

Bought a Westfield, with an old MK2 Ford Escort OHV engine, washing it outside my house got me far more attention than I could ever have thought possible, almost as if I was a different man.

I ran a MK1 XR2 and a Honda Prelude in the early 90s, both were expensive to insure but both had the desired effect I was looking for.

MX5 or Jap 2 seater isn't a bad idea.

I think older women are more impressed with badge snobbery, younger women like sports cars (don't have to be fast).
Open top FTW.

Leon cupra is a better base to start from if that's what you want, can't see why £2k won't get you one.

The likes of a 172 is far more " true hot hatch" though and again I'm sure could be done for your money

I appreciate that these are both great cars. But they're just not for me I'm afraid. Leons didn't excite me looks wise, and the 172 is just a tad small for my linking. Good thinking though!

So you want to spend 1/6th of the cost of your budget on a remap alone? Why not use that cash to buy a better car with, or a better example of a MK4 1.8t?

It's a lovely idea. But unfortunately the budget restriction is due to the fact that I need the car this weekend really. If I had time to save more, I would. Just thinking about mapping as something I can tinker with further down the line (if I end up really liking the car).

saab 900/ 9-3 turbo (with B204R engine)

+ intecooler upgrade & fuel pump ugrade
+ diy remap with T5 suite (easy or pay around £100 -£150 for something like a noobtune)

easy 300 - 360bhp for within budget

although this is all go without the looks lol

I've seen some nice examples of the Skoda Octavia VRS for your budget. You can get a nice E36 BMW for that too.

I'm an Alfa man though, so for £1,500 - 2,000, I'd be looking at a nice 147 or 156. I can't think of anything with as much style for less money. I'm newly single myself, so went out and bought a £1,500 V6 GTV... :D

Not sure what's wrong with that tbh. People on here make out they are much more expensive to run than they actually are.

No doubt you will come back with a response that includes the words 'suspension refresh', but a BMW is no different to another car in this respect.

Motors never disappoints. £1.5k. Recommend a BMW.

I wasn't really recommending one. I personally think most BMWs are dull, and would only ever consider one with an M badge. I do appreciate why people like them though, and it's hard to think of much for £1,500 that will drive as well...

There are many things I'd have over a BMW. I recommended the Alfa 147 or 156 if you read the rest of my post... I fully accept they won't be as nice to drive as a 3 series, but I just like them more. I like my £1,500 V6 GTV more than my friend's £8,000 M3...

Another consideration for me would be something like an original ST Focus. They look great and go well enough, even if they're not that quick. £2,000 will just about get you into an ST220 Mondeo too.

If your planning on buying again in the near future anyway, something more impressive, then I wouldn't worry about what you get just now as a stop-gap.

I recently picked up a 2003 Passat 1.9 TDI (130 BHP) for a little over £1,000. Then spent a couple hundred quid fitting cruise control, comfort indicators, arm-rest and a bluetooth / usb stereo. I will then remap it in a couple weeks times for another £100 or so. So all in, around £1500. That will be more than quick enough, big enough, economical enough, nice enough as a run around, and will loose very little value in the next year or so. And will always be easy enough to sell on.

I would go down this route, or something similar. Either that, of take your £2k and get something different. Like a

No such thing as impressing, certainly not girls with that budget and not a supra either. Save some more money ans get yourself a proper car for YOU!

Lies... just nothing impressing with 5 doors :D

I'd say E36 3-series. I had a £250 banger 325i for a few months years and years ago and it was awesome :)
