Cycling London to Shanghai - Part 2 Asia

What are you doing for clean drinking water regularly, do you buy or find somewhere to fill up, do you use tablets etc, same for food, are you buying bags of rice/pasta and cooking it or buying locally?

Currently mostly bottled water, super cheap. On mountain roads there are fountains that funnel the snow melt that I drink from and also drunk from a few clean looking streams away from towns in mountains. I've ended up drinking tap water in most countries and had no problems so far, although I've heard of people getting water poisoning in Iran (Mark Beaumont).

I am carrying a Sawyer Squeeze Mini water filter that will be very useful in Central Asia and West China. I've also got about 30 purification tablets as a backup.

Breakfast is usually bread with Butter/Jam/Honey etc.
Lunch is Bread with cured meats/ham and cheese
Dinner is Pasta or noodles with the same meat from lunch and maybe some veg.

Go to snacks are peanuts, oranges, bananas, snickers bars (any chocolate with nuts in it). Also after tough days sweating I find crisps are the easiest way to get a lot of salt down you.

When in towns I will bing on cheap food if available i.e. Kebabs in Turkey and various fried potato dishes in Georgia and Armenia. Sometimes I splurge to try local foods like Armenian BBQ which was incredible. It's also gotten to the point now that I crave familiar foods too so got myself a few pizzas when I was in Yerevan as I won't see much western food till big cities in China.

Aw man. I wanted to follow this from the start but forgot. :( Liked your facebook page so I can follow it now and I will be catching up on your blog!

Must be an amazing trip!

Awesome read, and a great inspiration. You've made me go and research the possibility of cycling around the Mekong Delta in Vietnam rather than getting a boat and it seems like a great way to do it.

And, in your early pictures you look reassuringly like me in the belly department!

Haha! It's certainly a great way to get in shape, just take it easy at the start. I've heard cycling in SEA is great as there are so many cheap guesthouses you don't need to carry camping gear leading to a much lighter setup.

Couple more questions :D

Your route is zigzag until you get to Serbia, is this to avoid mountains?

Do you always camp at sites or ever wild camp, how much are the sites?

Any countries to come you are worried about going through?

What tent are you using?

What arrangement do you have for mobile internet, are you on a PAYG international tariff?

:p

Yes, avoided Alps by following Danube river.

A mixture. Campsites in west Europe, wild camp everywhere else. Cheapest camp 2 eur, most expensive 10 eur.

Any countries to come you are worried about going through?

Stressed about Visa deadlines but no country worries me. Worried about traffic in Tehran and the approach to Shanghai.

What tent are you using?

Jack wolfskin gossamer one man bivvy-tent

Uk contract (£9 a month) for texting home in my smartphone and also just got a local sim for Iran in a keep handset.
