Facebook to buy Occulus Rift :/

except its not $2bn is it? it was $400mil + stocks, and you can be pretty sure that there is some contract in place that prevents the sale of those stocks for a number of years, or some crazy buyback clause.

Its quite simple really..

OR will get released, if there is unwanted FB bloat, the early adopters will scream about it, and OR will collapse as the bulk of the gamer/enthusiast market avoid it like the plague. On the other hand, if there is little FB bloat, then it could well become a success..

What I expect will happen, is that there will be OR, and there will be FBVR software bundled with it, I don't expect that FB software would intrude into other applications, as for one thing, that would be a legal minefield for FB as 'running ads before level start' as has been mentioned above, would usually be frowned upon by game developers.

Right now, to be honest, nobody in this thread has got a damn clue about what is going to happen, we're no better than any number of other panicky gossipmongers.

Exactly, yet most people are acting like it's an established market they can just muscle there way in. They can't it's a niche but profitable market, that will happily turn their back on. Seeing as someone can just copy the device and bring developers across.

400 mill plus stocks, so what are them stocks worth? do they not count when buying a company or something?

my point still stands but as a result from the recent posts from the top dogs at oculus, i've decided to wait and see how it pans out.

guess it's going to be a nice high frequency/res screen in the future just now then..

A simple example would just be using it on a plane with noise cancelling headphones on to watch a movie in a VR theatre. Unless you've tried it you maybe don't know but I'm telling you it's possible to use the rift in a tiny cupboard but have your mind convinced you're sitting in an open field.

How about bed bound people being able to experience inaccessible locations?
How about the elderly (or just people that are far away) being able to experience the "presence" of being at an event or show.

I don't often change my mind but I think Roy has made a good point

Facebook wants to be at the centre of everybody's social interaction, this may well be the device people use instead of Skype.
Years ago nobody chatted on a terminal, they went to the pub,
now everyone sits at home on skype. A new paradigm has been created.

Technically you could sit on the porch with your relatives in Texas and watch the world go by (like we do with google maps but in real time).

It means we might get it a bit sooner I guess, but that's not necessarily a good thing either. We should start a poll for whether anyone can possibly think a worse company to have bought them out.

EA? Ubisoft? They'd be strong contenders.

No wait... the NSA!

Honestly i think all of the the facebook hatred is ridiculous. While I dont spend ages on social media, I have used FB for many years now without paying a single penny and got a lot of enjoyment out of it... Who the hell cares if they have used my precious 'data' to try and target some ads my way? Get over it FFS! So many 'Keyboard Snowdens' nerd raging over absolutely nothing.

There's just so much potential for the Oculus Rift. It's the first "real" use of VR, and restraining it to just games as original intended might not be the greatest idea. Honestly, Facebook it being pretty smart about the whole situation, like they said, it is going to be the next big thing. The OR will be the first foot in the door that kick starts an entire new generation of VR, it just needed to get their first. With this funding behind the project, it can reach new heights never before possible. Just think of the possibilities, which is a generic statement I know, but it's true.
