7 A Day - Really ?

Have a Dr friend who mentioned it to me about five years ago. They've known about it for a while but basically didn't release a lot of the info as they could see people were struggling with the five a day message. Thus didn't want to put them off by setting what seems like an impossible goal

It doesn't seem all that difficult. I've had 4 portions of veg and 3 different animals without even trying today (and only 1200 cals so far) :p

I don't trust the labels that tell you how many portions of fruit/veg a product contains. I had some Heinz soup today which stated 3 of your 5 a day, for a tin of heavily processed soup? That can't be right..

Depends on how you define a 'portion'. My mum used to have a wall chart that had the fried onions on a hot dog listed as an example of one. So by that it's pretty easy.

Don't mind the veg, can't imagine eating that much fruit though. That much would make my ***** come out too fast.

The fact so many people find "5 a day" so impossibly hard, just goes to show what a sorry state the UK general populations' diet is in.

I mean seriously how is 5 a day hard? 1 fruit mixed in with breakfast, 1 veg with lunch, 2 with dinner and 1 fruit for some pudding some where along the course of the day. That's 5. It's easy enough (vegetarian or not), unless of course you're eating complete garbage every day

Heck I have 3 different fruits with my breakfast smoothie (mango, banana and strawberry). With dinner I usually have 2 small side servings of veg. I don't get it, what's the big deal?

I look at all the papers today and can't tell what is true and what is bs. Sniper kills 6 with one bullet? Porn on phones breeds criminals? Old people strain NHS?

May as well just eat the fruit rather than making a smoothie, which is worse for you.

I have four with lunch, some people don't get how tasty a salad can be. :D

Even though it is an April's fool - I eat over 7 a day. It's easy to do. :)

Cucumber, cherry tomatoes, avocado, spinach, apple, banana, beans, carrots and broccoli today - and that's a typical day really.

5 a day was only what 'whoever it is that decides these things' thought the British public might actually eat. Other European countries have 7 or more per day.

Generally it's just a good and simple rule to eat a mixed, balanced diet with fruit/veg with each meal and not too much salt, sugar or fat.

If I had that many portions of fruit I'd get fat from all the calories and diabetes from the sugar.

But while we are taxing healthy fruit products like smoothies to such a degree we can not seriously expect people to increase their portions of fruit a day.

Not all fruits are high sugar, and your body reacts differently to fruits than it does to refined sugars.

Or just have a bowl of Frosties instead

I like smoothies. I find them a lot easier to consume than eating the fruit. And whilst they might not be quite as healthy, done right they are still very good for you in proportion to a healthy diet

Don't listen to this as its a load of rubbish. This guideline is probably from the same people who say that you shouldn't eat foods high in fat.

Nevertheless, I don't eat fruit and I hardly eat veg. I get all my minerals and vitamines from meat.

I'm pretty sure liver contains way more minerals and vitamins than any fruit or veg.

I'm not saying its bad for you as it certainly isn't but there's too much emphasis on it.

Besides all this. All the government guidelines towards nutrition are completely off the mark and ridiculous.

Smoothies remove a lot of the fibre and vitamins and are highly concentrated in sugar.

If you have them there, don't butcher them in a blender. Just eat them. You may as well drink a cup of coffee instead.
