7 A Day - Really ?

The amount of sugar in even a commercial smoothie is not that high, we're talking 26g in an innocent smoothie, which is around the same as a couple of bananas or apples, and counts as two portions.

OCUK POSTERS IN FRUIT IS FULL OF SUGARS BI-WEEKLY DEBATE.

capslock.

Dont you people get bored of repeating yourselves?

send them back

That's why real cider is better than apple juice... the sugar turns to alcohol :D Before anyone says it I am aware that alcohol has a very high energy density and the yeast only extracts a small part of the calorific load of sugar. Nevertheless, real cider retains vitamin C and polyphenols in abundance. And trace minerals

What's so hard to believe about that? Soup is just blended vegetables...

The veg is almost transparent it has been processed so much and we are told not to boil veg as it destroys the goodness. Just wouldn't have expected a tin of heavily processed tomatoy syrup to be 2-3 portions.

The fact so many people find "5 a day" so impossibly hard, just goes to show what a sorry state the UK general populations' diet is in.

I mean seriously how is 5 a day hard? 1 fruit mixed in with breakfast, 1 veg with lunch, 2 with dinner and 1 fruit for some pudding some where along the course of the day. That's 5. It's easy enough (vegetarian or not), unless of course you're eating complete garbage every day
Indeed, most places abroad tend to have 7 a day as the recommendation. We only ended up with 5 a day as it was seemingly more achievable for those on the **** poor typical UK diet. Small changes and all that.

Even though it is an April's fool - I eat over 7 a day. It's easy to do. :)

Cucumber, cherry tomatoes, avocado, spinach, apple, banana, beans, carrots and broccoli today - and that's a typical day really.

Agreed, I eat much the same and I am amazed that people find 5+ portions of fruit a day hard to contemplate.

What diet due you eat to avoid fruit and veg guys? I literally can't imagine how you can get through the day avoiding them.

Nutrition has gotten so bad that instead of 5 they had to up it to 7. It used to be 3 before globalization and human breeding rates ruined the planet. Now all the farming methods and methods have reduced the vitamin level by so much.

Recent studies of vegetables, fruits and wheat have revealed a 5 to 35 percent decline in concentrations of some vitamins, minerals and protein over the last half-century, a phenomenon that has come to be known as 'the dilution effect.'

Bacon roll from the burger wagon in the morning, whatever junk i can find in a garage during the day and either junk takeaway in the evening (pizza or chips)

I've had a few places where i've got a tuna sandwich, taking a bite and finding they've hid manky green stuff under the bloody tuna, easy solution is bin it as it's vile.
I would be lucky to have 5 portions of fruit and veg a month, let alone a day :)

It says on the tin "do not boil". :p

glass of orange at breakfast, banana with your lunch + the salad filling in your sandwich or the greens that came with your sushi etc... that's 3 down by lunchtime at least... Can easily snack on a bag of carrots too...

evening meal can have a plenty of portions of veg

Where is the evidence ?

And if you are going to eat a diet high in Fruit and veg - which is basically just another name for Fibre enveloping a large amount of sugared water - expect to have hardly any teeth at 60

Also, the additional problems with arthritis/osteoporosis and brittle bones (due to lack of essential oils and fats in the joints - and calcium leaking back into the bloodstream to neutralise the excess acid ) - and Diabetes risks/insulin issues due to sugar spikes ;) There's also numerous cases of people having high fruit and veg diets going on to develop stomach ulcers / gastrointestinal issues due to too much acid and Vegetable fibre. My own father spent 3 hours unconcious, 4 hours in A&E - and 2 days in hospital caused by eating 2 bananas a day constantly for a few weeks (and then getting 3 days of constipation - due to not consuming enough fluid with all the bananas he had been eating) - I kid you not.

Stick to the bacon and full fat butter - you'll be happier and healthier.:D

Was watching a bit of tv the other week and it claimed that daily fruit/veg guideleines vary massively around the globe. It claimed the UK's recommendation is only 5 because the nutrition boffins feel our diet is so bad that having 10+ like some other european countries would be unachievable/unrealistic.
