Looking to connect old HDDs to USB2/3 External.

I'd like to re-purpose my old hard drives to save spending money on more external drives since this is data I will not access often.

As you can see I have spare sata connectors and internal power leads, and my asus P6T deluxe(version unclear) mobo has an external sata port.

I am looking for a device/leads to power the drives from USB and ideally connect them to the computer by usb.

It does not have to be on the same lead, I have 3 spare USB ports, of both usb2 and usb3.

So, that is an adaptor with Sata data and power connectors to one or two USB ports. anyone know of something that could do this? I am not certain of the drive dimensions, but they are not 2.5 and there are many devices for that form factor.

Search for "eSata HDD Hard Disk Docking Station USB Hub 64 in 1 Card Reader"

Searching for that here, yielded out of stock or out of my price range.

These were more helpful, but I am not technically minded enough to determine their interface to the pc.

The reviews on the former detail that it comes with two cables, eSata to eSata and a usb, but there is little other information.

I am guessing neither is powered by usb. These appear to perform the function required, thank you for the help.

The second one has no review with info on contents nor does the product description. I prefer the look of the second one to run two at once.

Not sure there is enough information to make a purchase.

EDIT:

Akasa Flexstor eSATA Cable for 2.5 inch SATA HDD & SSD

This for 3.5 would be perfect.

Can USB drive a 3.5 mechanical drive?

No you won't be able to power a 3.5" drive from USB so you're going to have to use an external power supply.

look at the startech 5.25" hdd dock

they slot in a spare 5.25" bay, same size as a dvd drive, then you can plug in/out what hddd you need to use ect

Sorry, missed the comments about wanting to power from USB. The issue there is that 3.5" drives (which you have pictured) need power from both the +12V and +5V rail. A USB socket can only provide 5V without extra circuitry to boost the voltage. Even then you would struggle to draw enough power from even multiple USB ports to power the drive.

I could not find this on overclockers, but I did find it on scan .co.uk. It suits all my needs and most importantly does not add to my desktop clutter.

On top of that it opens the door to cheap hdds for backups.

Price at scan is £18.5 inc post, have I missed it somehow on overclockers?
