Windows 8.1 Update 1 arriving on March 11

Guess it's time for me to eat my hat
Start menu is coming back with live tile integration.
Not sure when though.

Windows will be $0 from now.
No explanation. I'm assuming some sort of bing advertising version?

Its really worth getting into Build. Free Xbox with Kinect and a $500 voucher for Ms store for other win8 devices.

IIRC it's about $2000 to get into the conference, so while that will offset some of it, it's still fairly expensive (not counting the costs of getting to San Francisco in the first place)

I'm personally more interested in the universal apps windowed on the desktop. I've spent the past few years of my career making WPF applications.
They have pretty much been entirely superseded now that universal apps can run in the same space.
Thankfully using XAML for universal apps is very similar technically, so it should make it easier to get developers like me involved in building phone, tablet and eventually XBox apps.

Think they said just for smaller devices, <9" screen, got to compete with Android I guess.

Good news on the start menu as although I don't hate the start screen and like the live tiles in some apps, my experience with the Start8 replacement is much better on the desktop.

Hopefully bringing WinRT to the desktop will keep most users happy and encourage more app development as most of the current apps are quite lacking. The clearly quite capable touch Office demo gives me hope for the modern platform.

Have a look at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/sub...Languages=en&PageSize=10&PageIndex=0&FileId=0 if you need to find the official file names and hashes.

Excellent, grabbed. Will finally get around to installing Win8 this weekend :D Had it since launch, never bothered to change from 7. With all the changes in 8.1 and Update 1 it's finally in a state I feel its worth upgrading to.

So is it actually worth the upgrade from 7 to 8 now? any issue with incompatible programs/drivers etc?

Or just wait for 9? :P

Vista/7/8 are all the same core O/S (they are NT 6.0/6.1/6.2) so anything that works on one should work on all, it was the same with 2000/XP (NT 5.0/5.1).

I wonder if we will be able to grab the full iso when it is released to the general public. iirc it was a bit of a pain downloading the iso for 8.1 so hopefully this time it'll be a bit more straight forward.

They'll probably use the same download system. :(

Updated for the mu zip. Painless update took 15 minutes. KB2919442 already on system from last month. Four restarts and we now have version 6.3.9600.17031.
