what foods can / can't you give up?

over the years i have managed to give up:

fruit drinks and fizzy drinks inclunding pepsi/coke.
Crisps.
cakes
Cheese (i mss that the most).
although i still have bread (sandwiches) i dont have it with "every" meal.

The foods i can't give up are:

chocolate.
biscuits.

what about you guys ?

Christ. Might well give up life.

I cannot understand for the life of me why someone who is perfectly healthy would give up lifes pleasures based on tabloid sensationalism.

Very unlikely that a non-healthy diet would kill anyone that young.

I know one that did die at 45 and another who's doc told him if he wants to see 45 he needs to make massive changes yesterday. Cholesterol through the roof. Neither do/did any exercise and worked behind a desk

Although your correct its unlikely but not unheard of.

'Change your lifestyle or you'll be dead within the year' is a catchphrase of most GPs. I have a friend who should have died every year for the last 10 years going by their advice (he is still very much alive and kicking).

Are you seriously suggesting there is no health benefits to eating healthily and exercising?

I've a colleague who eats a horrific diet, does no exercise, and looks about 15/20 years older than I do despite being less than 5 years older than me. He's also suffering from weight/age related illnesses like sleep apnoea, hernias, and joint problems. He's under 35 and can hardly walk up the stairs without a rest, while at almost 30 I cycle to work and back as well as walk my dog twice a day.

He went to Florida a few years ago on a 'holiday of a lifetime' and hated it because he couldn't stay on his feet all day to enjoy the parks. It's not just about length of life but quality of life. I believe the exercise and diet I follow will make me fit, healthy and able to enjoy life for a long time to come.

Because you get to eat loads of fat and protein! Bacon, Spanish/Italian cooked meats, eggs, nuts, cheese and green veg are a large portion of what I eat during a day :)

Thin with heart disease?

In response to OP, why give up any food completely? Just eat a balanced diet in moderation and do exercise.

No. I'm suggesting that the "give up smoking, fatty foods, start exercising or you'll be dead soon" line is way overused by GPs. Sure if it scares a few people into changing their lifestyle you could argue it's worth it, but that doesn't make it completely honest prognosis for most people.

I believe that everyone is different and whilst the identikit '5 fruits & veg and an hour's moderate exercise a day' mantra would improve the life expectancy of most, it isn't true in all cases.

We've just had health assessments at work. a 40 year old who has been smoking 20 a day for 20 years was given a lung age of a 77 year old. I went up, a former 20 a day smoker for 10 years and the more than occasional 'naughty cigarette' (which according to reports are the equivalent of 20 fags each) user was given a lung age of a 22 year old (I'm 34 this year). Another colleague who smokes like chimney was given a lung age much lower than her actual age too.

When it comes to health, there's not a one size fits all system, we're all different.

I need to give up cheese, ( high cholesterol) but it must be one of them things that gets my taste buds the most. Instant impact for a good cheese its just so dam nice over everything and on its own at times.

A bit like a good red wine the first sip is amazing.

Edit, Cant give up either but have cut cheese out a hell of a lot more

There's nothing I couldn't completely give up (water? :p) but obviously some are more hard than others

Eg crisps easy to give up (or maybe iI have as I generally don't eat them?), chocolate however would be harder.

Doesn't quite work like that, but I'll let you research that yourself if you're interested ;)

Anything really if I had to. Though I'd struggle to give up healthy foods.

Just get out...... :p

I think if I needed to give up anything for a medical reason I could do it quite easily, however, I find it hard/ need a lot of will power to go much longer than a week without a beer and I do like the occasional sweet thing or savoury snack like cheese on crackers etc.

Bread

I tried going zero/low carb. Didnt miss spuds much but no bread is :/
Id be in prison on bread and water and be happy.

I don't snack really. I only really eat good fresh food. I have cut down on carbs of late. Wine is what i would struggle to give up.
