OK, so my Giant Defy has an FSA Omega compact 50/34 chain set on it. Was fitting a new chain the other day and noticed that the 50t chainring is munted - quite a few broken and worn teeth.

So, I'm assuming I can change just the big ring without needing to swap anything else? What's the important things to look out for in terms of compatibility? Could I just fit any 50t Shimano ring for example, tiagra or 105?

The difference is less than the difference raising or lowering tyre pressure would make.

If you can ride both blindfolded for a mile and tell which is which then I'll give you a Smartie.

All this being said, I did read an article saying that bigger rings and sprockets are marginally more efficient, subject to a trade off in weight, and presumably a bigger ring will wear a bit more slowly over the same distance. It's all going to be fairly tiny differences though.

The only thing you need to look out for is the BCD (sometimes called PCD) which is the Bolt Circle Diameter. As long as the BCD is the same then you can fit any chainring you want (although if you decide to change the number if teeth you need to look out for the maximum capacity of your rear mech: the difference between small/small and big/big it can cope with).

Not enjoying myself at the moment.

TT last thursday was disappointing & dropped out of the race on Saturday after 13 laps.

I think I did too much last week, commutes, two 40 mile fast rides, 10m TT and (part of) a race left me feeling shattered.

Went out on the group ride last night, 4 of us including one new chap. Normally there's an almost neutral section at the start but none of that last night, 27/28mph straight away. I struggled to keep up and let myself get dropped on one of the drags. Not sure I ate enough during the day yesterday and I started to feel a bit faint.

Turns out I should have tried hanging on for a bit longer as the pace calmed down about 4 miles later. Strava link - http://www.strava.com/activities/130626774 I turned off at about 17.5 miles.

Hopefully when Liege - Bastogne - Leige is done next weekend I'll be more confident and able to concentrate on the shorter, faster rides.

Everyone has off days. It's impossible to perform at your peak all the time.

Last night I bailed after one lap of RP! I felt de-motivated and weak so decided to head home.

I'm blaming the 3 previous days of heavy exercise.

Must admit, I struggled cycling along the canal towpath to the Diggle hotel, then consuming two pints of Black Sheep real ale, before cycling back!

There are some rather terrifying (steep) steps at the locks, I rode them without even thinking lol! :D

Going to do the Cheshire Ring, overnight stay with panniers.

Come on guys, your fitness levels are awesome, but lets not forget what cycling is all about!

Going faster than everyone else and overtaking them with an air of nonchalance, trying to look like you aren't putting in any effort?

Yes all of that is great.

Try outdoors, fresh air, exercise without even realising your doing it.
Stopping at cafes, having a chat, having a laugh.

Those are the parts of cycling I enjoy best.

bit sad trying to prove your best constantly?

I may be wrong, or just getting old.
