Hi all,

I'm looking to expand my storage on my system with a new 500gb Hdd and a larger drive for games and media.

I was thinking about picking up a Wd black 2tb but I'm not sure if its worth the money compared to just a green blue or red, any opinions would be great

Get it if the 5 year warrantee is something you want.

Remember this isn't a guarantee your data is safe, always backup irreplaceable data.

I went for the Toshiba 3TB £79.99, with a 2 year warrantee.

WD green and reds don't seem to offer much for the extra cost and lower performance.

Very happy with my two WD green drives, one is over 3 years old now(carried over from old PC) and still going strong.

I prefer the silent running over pure performance, they run plenty fast enough alongside an SSD.

I've seen just as many dead WD drives as Seagate to be fair.

If you want the best pay the premium for WD black or enterprise drives for either manufacturer.

Though the premium these carry you can probably replace the cheaper ones after 2-3 years for the same costs after selling off you old drives.

If you want to save some money but get a little less of a warranty I believe the Blue Caviar is just as good as the black, I can't fault my black caviar though :)

WD are the only mechanical disks I'd use these days. I've got 2x 3TB reds that have been spinning for a year without so much as skipping a beat (several power cuts too), and a couple of blacks in various machines that are out of warranty but still loving it.

Greens or Blues?

We primarily use WD Blacks.. Used to use Seagates, but not any more, WD are far superior for reliability.
Failure rate is probably 90% Seagate /// 10% WD..

WD Blacks are hardware same as WD RE's but different firmware. RE has TLER for RAID.

WD Blacks are built better (over greens and blues) and the spindle is held in two places over one, because of the build they can put 5 years on them. WD Blacks also have dual controllers.

Greens and blues for WD and standard Barracuda for Seagate have been pretty even in reliability.

The enterprise drives from both companies have been rock solid, I've used Blacks, RE4 and Constellations. (Though I must admit WD drives out number Seagate 4-1 here .^_^)

Would say a 1tb black/ blue paired with a larger red alongside an ssd boot drive be a good option?

With the black for games and applications and the red for movies and music?

I normally keep my hdds for around 4-5 years then look to replace them so it's nice to have that piece of mind if they do break within that time. I purchased a one week old wd black from another forum and then found out it had NO warranty as the buyer got it free for testing. Let's just say my 5 year warranty is now with him..!!

Yeah HDDs are one of the few things I wouldn't pick up second hand.

Best of luck with your 5 year warranty from the seller, unless he stated he would cover it you have no right to expect that.

You pay your money you take your chance and I would not buy a used HDD (one that is not opened yes).

If myself

1 TB black for OS/Apps.
WD Red for media / data

Does your motherboard support Intel Rapid Start Technology? If so you could buy a 64 GB SSD and use to catch the 1 TB black drive.

Alternately you could use an SSD for OS drive.

As a rule of thumb, if i'm either building a new PC or if i'm re-installing windows and the OS drive is a few years old, then I normally purchase a new OS drive.

Years ago OCUK were selling some old stock 500GB WD RE2 drives for £20!! I have a couple still in use as RAID recovery drives! Those old WD RE2's were incredibly reliable, if you google issues it's almost impossible to find anyone who mention they fail.

I had a 2tb WD Black die just after a year nearly to the day missing the sellers guarantee. It was replaced by WD in a few days though without too much hassle.

Not trying to put you off but make sure you back up.
